On behalf of the Long Beach Development Services Housing and Neighborhood
Services Bureau, I am pleased to welcome you to the Neighborhood Leadership
Program (NLP) Neighborhood Leader Achievement Dinner. This dinner is made
possible by the generous support of the Marathon Petroleum Foundation!
This is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate neighborhood leaders for all your
hard work. The dinner kicks off recruitment of new leaders to participate in the
Neighborhood Leadership Program's Class of 2019.
The Neighborhood Leadership Program thrives with the active involvement of
neighborhood leaders engaged in recruiting and training new leaders in our
community. Your participation will help us to continue this critically acclaimed
program. The success of the program is due to the hard work of staff and volunteers
who work tirelessly and include participants that reflect the diversity of our city.

A CELEBRATION OF LONG BEACH NEIGHBORHOODS
This issue of the Neighborhood Leadership Program Alumni Achievement Report highlights the work
of the people who are the heart of our neighborhoods: our graduates! This year, we celebrate the
Neighborhood Leadership Program's partnership with the Marathon Petroleum Foundation and the
priceless contributions and impacts Long Beach grass-roots neighborhood leaders have in roles as
neighborhood association presidents, clean-up volunteers, tree planters, historic preservationists,
community volunteers, and many others!
Bryant Ben
CLASS OF 1992
Bryant Ben continues his work with the Housing
and Neighborhood Services Bureau. He hosted
an information table at a Health and Housing
Resource Fair event at MacArthur Park. Families
learned about the Home Improvement Rebate
Program, Commercial Improvement Rebate
Program, Neighborhood Clean-up Assistance
Program, Urban Forestry, Neighborhood
Leadership Program, and the Neighborhood
Resource Center.
CLASS OF 1994
Linda Palacios organized a neighborhood
cleanup with the Washington School
Neighborhood Association, staff from the Office
of Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez and Housing &
Neighborhood Services Bureau in May. These
amazing volunteers removed more than nine
tons of trash and dumped items from streets
and alleys in the neighborhood.
CLASS OF 1997
Sharon McLucas is the Founder of Forgotten
Images, a traveling education exhibit that
includes African-American artifacts from the
1600's to present day. Sharon and her husband
David have collected more than 20,000 items.
In 2018, the couple's exhibition "Forgotten
Images" earned the State of the Arts Award.

Councilmember Roberto Uranga unveiled
a special bench dedicated to Jerry Caliguiri
at Willow Springs Park. Jerry served as the
President of the Kiwanis Club of Bixby Knolls/
North Long Beach and served on the Board of
Directors of Neighborhoods, USA. Jerry's family,
friends and Neighborhood Leadership Program
graduates participated in the dedication. Jerry
served many volunteer hours in support of
the Neighborhood Leadership Program and
was passionate about helping to build the next
generation of neighborhood leaders. He set a
great example for others.

Rocio was the recepient of the 2018 Long Beach
Chamber Women's Business Council Women of
Excellence Award. The award was presented in
the outstanding educator category.

Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau.
He shared Bureau programs and services at a
Day of the Dead event held at 14th Street Park.

Sunshine Daye participated in a cleanup
held in the Craftsman Village Historic District
in September. The event was supported by
Anthony Formoso (Class of 2012) in his role as
Litter Free Long Beach staff.

Griselda Barba continues to work in the
Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau.
She hosted an information table at Latinos In
Action's amazingAnnual Health Fair, Community
Resources and Heritage Celebration day at
Peace Park. Families learned about the Home
Improvement Rebate Program, Commercial
Improvement Rebate Program, Neighborhood
Cleanup Assistance Program, Urban Forestry,

Neighborhood Resource Center.
The Neighborhood Leadership Program's Class
of 2018 participants learned more about grant
proposal writing from Ines Echegaray. Ines has
written 45 winning grant proposals since she
graduated from the Neighborhood Leadership
Program in 2003! Ines shared her passion for
making a difference and shared creative ways
to partner with the community to help address
community needs. She also shared advice on
power sharing and spoke to the class about
effective teamwork based on her experience as
a neighborhood leader. Thank you for always
giving back to the community, Ines!

Vincent Puth currently works as Activities
Director at Poly High School and was an
instrumental figure in organizing a Bite of
Reality financial literacy event in partnership
with the Housing and Neighborhood Services
Bureau and Orange County Credit Union.

CLASS OF 2006
Reyna Ochoa hosted five neighborhood
cleanups in 2018 as part of the Sunny Central
Neighborhood Association, collecting a total of
74 tons of trash and dumped items.
Matthew Brown stepped down from the Long
Beach Neighborhood Foundation Board and is
the Assistant Principal at Poly High School. He
was also instrumental in organizing a Bite of
Reality financial literacy event in partnership
with the Housing and Neighborhood Services
Bureau and Orange County Credit Union.
CLASS OF 2007
During 2018, David Clement was involved in
the following organizations: he was a board
member of Friends of Bixby Park, the Rose
Park Neighborhood Association, Bluff Heights
Neighborhood Association, and was a greeter
at Belmont Heights Community Association
meetings, and served as a member of Better
Housing Long Beach and the North Alamitos
Beach Association.

Jim Danno continues his employment with
the City of Long Beach's Department of Public
Works. He was featured in the Long Beach Post
for his work repairing, installing, cleaning up
and maintaining roughly 100,000 city signs.
CLASS OF 2010
Alice Robinson continues to host a monthly
community lunch program at Martin Luther
King, Jr. Park in Central Long Beach. On August
1, 2018, the group of volunteers named after
Alice, Friends of Alice Robinson celebrated her
15th year anniversary of the lunch program.
CLASS OF 2011
Ida Marie Briggs is the Founder/CEO of
The Mustard Seed Enteprises. Marie is
a Inspirational facilitator and a Personal

development Life Coach. In August of 2018,
she received the Thicknation Business Women
of the Year Award from the Southern California
Thicknation Organization. As a member of
this organization, she helped collect over 280
pairs of socks to distribute to people living in
the Skid Row District. Marie volunteered at the
8th annual Delta Airlines Holidays in the Hangar
event, In September, Marie produced her first
play named 'Excess Baggage, A Women's Story
- Only You Know When You've had Enough',
receiving acknowledgements from Mayor
Robert Garcia and County Supervisor Janice
Hahn. Excess Baggage is a theatrical production
that illustrates the accumulation of excess
baggage one may carry throughout their life.
Emily Tanaka, also from the class of 2011, was
responsible for the graphic design and media
presentation of this production. Emily also put
together a 16 -page program pamphlet for the
production.
Jorge Rivera, founder of LiBRE (Long Beach
Residents Empowered) has been active with
the organization since January 2016 and
it has grown to four staff. The grassroots
organization advocates for more affordable
housing, tenant protections and community
economic development. This year, the
organization started the first ever city-wide
Senior Tenant Alliance (STA). Jorge continues
to be a voice of the community, advocating
for the rights of the marginalized by speaking
at City Council meetings, holding rallies and
protests and getting involved in various other
civic engagement activities.

Emily Kiwa Tanaka was part of the volunteer
organizing team for the 4th Annual Long Beach
Zine Fest held on Saturday, September 15, 2018
at the Expo Arts Center in partnership with
the Bixby Knolls Neighborhood Association.
This free one -day festival celebrated zines,
independent print media, music, art and
cultural diversity. The event was held at a larger
venue this year and hosted more zinesters
than years past. Emily also had the pleasure of
facilitating a panel discussion on Asian American
identity. The event was awarded a Long Beach
Arts Council microgrant to help cover costs.
Emily also shared her knowledge of effective
marketing with the Class of 2018 at Session 9 of
the program on Thursday, June 9, 2018.

his mother planted a tree in memory of their
father and husband Timmothy Serei Ros, who
retired from Long Beach Transit after driving
the Anaheim Street bus route for many years.
Sakun and Bora Nhek planted a tree with Long
Beach Cambodian Evangelical Church members
and AOC7 in memory of their family member
Chhuong Meas. Both families appreciated the
opportunity to plant these trees this in memory
of their loved ones.

Andre Beasley assisted the Khmer Parent
Association to plant two trees on Orange
Avenue near Anaheim Street in memory of two

Lewis Brownson helped with Councilman Dee
Andrew's Serving with a Thankful Heart event on
Monday, November 19, 2018 at McBride Park. A
free hot meal was served to all in attendance.
Lewis helped to feed over 700 people.
Anthony Formoso had an amazing 2018
year. He held an internship as a Field Deputy
for Councilmember Jeannine Pearce while
working part time with the City of Long Beach's
Enviromental Services Bureau Litter Free Long
Beach. Anthony assisted neighborhood groups
at neighborhood cleanups and collected over
500 tons of trash last year. On May 19, 2018, he
organized Long Beach'sfirst Filipino Festival. The
event had an attendance of over 9,000 people.
Anthony also organized an "I Dig Long Beach"
tree planting in the East Village Neighborhood
to plant 13 trees with help from Orange County
Credit Union. He was featured in the Long
Beach Business Journal in an article entitled
"Improving the Neighborhood, One Plant, Meal
or Book at a Time" for a Neighborhood Partners
Program grant he wrote to build six Little Free
Libraries. The Long Beach Business Journal
named Anthony as part of "a new generation of
neighborhood organizers." Anthony volunteers
five days a week serving meals to those in need
at Christian Outreach in Action. He also serves
on the board of Pools of Hope and Wrapthe Kids.
This November, he won his 2nd championship
beltas an undefeated professional MMAfighter.

Mary Simmons continued her work as a board
member of the Anaheim, Orange, Cherry
and 7th Street Neighborhood Association
(AOC7). Together with the association, Mary
participated in neighborhood cleanups and
removed over 81 tons of large dumped items
from the community. Mary also helped to
organize AOC7's 6th Annual Literacy Fair in May
of 2018 which gave away 5,000 new and gently
used books to children at MacArthur Park.

Mary helped organize an "I Dig Long Beach"
tree planting in her neighborhood in October
2018 in which residents planted 100 trees in
memory of LBFD Captain Otis Reid. She is also
involved in the paving of a dirt alley through
the Long Beach Development Services Placed
Based Neighborhood Improvement Strategy.
Recently, she helped to coordinate the giveaway
of 200 meals in partnership with the Office of
CouncilmemberJeannine Pearce and partnered
with The ROCK Christian Fellowship to giveaway

600 turkeys with trimmings at MacArthur Park.
AOC7 was also successful in advocating for
two solar panel -lit cross walks on 10th Street
to promote pedestrian safety and for a total
revitalization of MacArthur Park with the Trust
for Public Land, Parks, Recreation and Marine
and the Office of Vice Mayor Dee Andrews.
Tommie Simmons has been very active in his
church The ROCK Christian Fellowship serving
the congregation as a deacon. He played a very
active part at the ROCK's 2018 Thanksgiving
turkey giveaway at MacArthur Park giving away
over 600 Turkey basket dinners, each able to
feed a family of eight. He also spent time in
2018 working with the Anaheim Orange Cherry
and Seventh Street Neighborhood Association
(AOC7) and its annual book drive/literacy fair.
CLASS OF 2013
John Kindred is a Co-founder of the Long Beach
Environmental Alliance (LBEA), the Outreach
Director of Long Beach Gray Panthers, and a
member of Don't Waste Long Beach, Coalition
for a Smoke Free Long Beach, Cambodian
Association of America, Citizen Climate Lobby,
Long Beach Residents Empowered, Congress of
California Seniors, California Alliance for Retired
Americans, Long Beach Transit's Paratransit
Advisory Committee and is a graduate of the
Long Beach Rising! Class of 2018.

In 2018, John Kindred, the Long Beach Gray
Panthers, Cambodian Association of Americ2
and LBEA took part in the Long Beach Memoria
Hospital Drug Take Back and helped remoVE
over 1,000 pounds of medication from the
environment. As a member of LiBRE an(
Long Beach Gray Panthers, John has helper
address the growing homelessness and renting
problems facing people of Long Beach and its
impact.
Mary Sramek started a new donor -advised
fund through the Long Beach Community
Foundation called Every Lunch Matters Long
Beach. Marywas shocked after learning that the
policy of the Nutrition Services Branch of the
school district was to extend credit up to $11.00
for students in elementary and K-8 schools who
do not qualify for free or reduced -price meals. A
child whose account exceeds a negative balance
of $11.00 with the next purchase is given an
"alternate meal." The alternate meal includes a
fruit and milk. There was no place to go online
to donate to help keep these children fed. Mary
dedicated herself to finding a way for people
to be able to donate and developed a lunch
voucher program with the Long Beach Unified
School District Nutrition Services Department.
The result of the voucher program is that five of
the 42 participating schools have fed students
over 150 times since launching in March 2018.

CLASS OF 2014
Paulette Dunn -Sanders, is the founder of
"Stopping Pressure On Teens." Paulette and
the members of the organization took an oath
to attend as many tree plantings as possible
in 2018. The tree plantings were exciting
experiences, seeing people connecting for
many causes. Paulette likes to live by the motto:
"Teamwork makes the dream work!" Paulette
is also involved in the City of Long Beach Safe
Communities Workgroup. The workgroup is
responsible for the implementation of the Safe
Communities Coordination Plan under Safe
Long Beach. The Safe Communities Workgroup
is dedicated to decreasing violence through
increasing civic engagement and participation
in leadership programs as well as decreasing
the unemployment rate.

The Neighborhood Leadership Program
(NLP) celebrated the graduation of the Class
of 2018. 32 Long Beach residents completed
the five-month training and learned about
project management, event planning, effective
communication and teambuilding. Adelegation
from Long Beach's Sister City Yokkaichi, Japan
attended the Graduation ceremony, including
Class of 2014 graduate Yasumasa Ohno.
Yokkaichi's Mayor Tomohiro Mori shared how
his city is developing neighborhood leaders
using elements of Long Beach's Neighborhood
Leadership Program.
Stephan Sandoval continues working with
the Jane Addams Neighborhood Association
with several community improvement projects
including monthly neighborhood cleanups.
The cleanups are opportunities for neighbors to
pitch in and help keeptheAddams neighborhood
clean.
CLASS OF 2015
Stacey Morrison took part in Cal Heights Re -
Leafs tree care day in the California Heights
neighborhood and along Atlantic Avenue.
Volunteers watered and trimmed trees they
planted in the neighborhood and also trimmed
two trees that had been hit by a car to help
shape them back into trees. Thank you for
making a difference in our community!

Jenilee is also a Community Yoga instructor
at Drake Park and a founding member of the
Cambodia Town Neighborhood Association.
Enchantra Cardenas -Baldwin coordinated an
"I Dig Long Beach" tree planting in partnership
with Justice for Murdered Children. Over
200 volunteers planted 40 new "I Dig Long
Beach" street trees in the Poly High School
neighborhood. Long Beach Police Department's
Chief Robert Luna provided welcoming remarks
and thanked all the volunteers. Families from
across Southern California adopted the trees
and pledged to water and care for them in
memory of their family members. The trees are
funded by a grant from the Port of Long Beach.

Jenilee Arnaldo is a reporter for L.B. in your
City News and covered 15 community events.
In January, she received an Unsung Hero
Certificate of Recognition from Councilwoman
Lena Gonzalez in honor of her work and
dedication to the East Village Association.
She also received a Certificate of Recognition
from from Councilmember Jeannine Pearce
for her outstanding leadership within the art
community. She was also recognized with a
Nubia Flores Cedeno
Nubia Flores Cedeno organized the first
parent -led candidates' forum for the Long
Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) board
member election for District 3 on behalf of the
2018 ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT REPORT - 13
LBUSD Community Advisory Committee. She
also created a parent support group, Parent
Circle, at her son's school in an effort to connect
parents, foster inclusion, acceptance of all
abilities and provide parent education. She
was part of a group of mothers who presented
recommendations to the local school board
about how to improve inclusive practices and
create better accessibility for children with
disabilities and learning differences in the
school district. Other accomplishments this past
year for Nubia include winning a Long Beach
Unified School District VIP of The Year Award,
and receiving the PTA Volunteer Award. Nubia
also worked to help register Spanish-speaking
voters in Orange County.
Debbie Shelton was among the Neighborhood
and community leaders from the Starr King
and College Square neighborhoods met
with Housing and Neighborhood Services
Bureau staff, Planning Bureau staff, and
Councilmember Rex Richardson and his staff
to participate in a stakeholders meeting at
Pools of Hope. The Housing and Neighborhood
Services Bureau partnered with the community
to assist residents, homeowners, businesses
and commercial property owners to improve
their properties and their neighborhoods
through the North Place Based Neighborhood
Improvement Strategy.

Raul Nario continues to work with the Starr King
Neighborhood Association. The association
hosts monthly neighborhood cleanups usually

Dusty Stiggers received a certificate of
recognition from 9th District Vice Mayor Rex
Richardson. He also received a certificate of
recognition from Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez
and a District Two Tree Planting Certificate.
He also received the Love Be-yond Limits
Committed Heart Awards and received a
Certificate of Recognition for his participation in
the first Annual Filipino Festival.
CLASS OF 2018
Crystal Day took on a leadership role within the
Washington School Neighborhood Association
as part of the support system and asacommunity
liaison in 2018. Using the grant writing skills
she learned in the Neighborhood Leadership
Program, Crystal won a $45,000 grant from the
Marathon Petroleum Foundation to integrate
S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Math) student programming and robotics
curriculum at Intellectual Virtues Academy High
School.

Linda Reach is a founding member of the
Cambodia Town Neighborhood Association
She was also involved with a food distribution
effort to local non -profits (Long Beach Rescue
Mission, American Legion forVeterans, Christian
Outreach in Action and Pacific Asian Counseling
Services). Linda was also a participant at the
Tree Planting in Memory of Long Beach Fire
Department Captain Reid Otis.
Kenny Varghese volunteered with Sokha Ny at
a joint event between Food Finders and Boeing.
Kenny continues his employment with School
on Wheels in Long Beach. In 2019, he will begin
a position in an organization where he will be
coordinating volunteer events. Kenny is looking
forward to 2019 where he plans to create more
opportunities for others to serve the Long
Beach community.

the environment. In 2018, LBEA helped remove
over 60 pounds of cigarette butts and over a
ton of litter from the Long Beach environment.
Team Breast Day Ever
Juanita Wilson (Class of 2010) held her annual
campaign to collect jackets for school children.
Mama J's Jacket Drive sought jacket donations
from various organizations and individuals
for several months to provide to children at
Roosevelt Elementary School on November 30,
2018. Several alumni helped with the project
including Jacob Rosborough (Class of 2016),
Dusty Stiggers (Class of 2017), Lewis Brownson,
Long Beach Environmental Alliance
Cambodia Town Neighborhood Association
(Class of 2017), Annie Banks (Class of 2018) and
Leo Cox, Jr. (Class of 2018).
Three graduates formed the Cambodia Town

Environmental Alliance. The groups co -hosted
a neighborhood cleanup in February of 2018 in
the Downtown area and collected trash and

Cambodia Town Neighborhood Association. So
far, the associaton has successfully conducted
two neighborhood clean-ups and a food
distribution event. All three graduates are also
members of L.B In Your City News and attended
community events to provide news reporting

members of Team Breast Day Ever. Together
with friends and family, the group raised money
for the Azmerican Cancer Society's "Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk in honor of
cancer survivor Ana Ochoa.

Neighborhood Leadership Program (NLP)
graduates participated in the 2018 Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Parade. Over a dozen graduates
including Isela Zarate (Class of 2012), Reyna
Ochoa (Class of 2006), Kelly Carroll (Class of
2015), Jenilee Arnaldo (Class of 2017), Anthony
Formoso (Class of 2012), Laura Ochoa (Class of

2017), Margaret Madden, Class of 1994, Henry

The group marched in the parade and invited
parade watchers to apply for the Class of 2018.
Friends of MacArthur Park hosted their first
clean-up event! Over 100 volunteers helped
clean the park and the children's playground
including Jesus Lopez (Class of 2014), Anthony
Formoso (Class of 2012), Mary Simmons
(Class of 2012), Jean Acevedo (Class of 2017),
Andre Beasley (Class of 2012), and Nubia
Flores Cedeho (Class of 2017). The effort was
also supported by volunteers from Midtown
Business Improvement District, Khmer Parents
Association, AOC7, Orange County's Credit
Union, Molina Healthcare and more.
Several NLP Alumni joined Housing and
Neighborhood Services and Orange County
Bite of Reality
Credit Union, to co -host a financial literacy
training in partnership with Long Beach
Polytechnic High School. The "Bite of Reality"
training offered an interactive simulation and
educated students about financial decision-
making and personal budgeting. During the
simulation, students received an occupation,
a family, and a salary and were asked to visit
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade
stations to acquire a home, transportation,
clothing, and other necessities. Students also
learned about the importance of developing
and maintaining good credit. This was the
second "Bite of Reality" training offered by the
partnership of the Neighborhood Leadership
Program, the Orange County Credit Union
and LBUSD schools, additional "Bite of Reality"
trainings will be hosted in the future.

Esperanza Ochoa (Class of 2005), Mayra Ochoa
(Class of 2010), Reyna Ochoa (Class of 2006)
and Isela Zarate (Class of 2012) are members of
the Sunny Central Neighorhood Association. In
2018 Sunny Central Neighborhood Association
hosted five neighborhood clean-ups, collecting
a total of 74 tons of trash and dumped items.
LBEA & West Gateway
Over 200 volunteers planted 62 new street trees
in March with "I Dig Long Beach." The planting
took place in the Hamilton neighborhood near
the 91 Freeway. Vice Mayor Rex Richardson
provided welcoming remarks, thanked all the
volunteers and recognized the Gardenia Avenue
& Rose Avenue Neighborhood Watch group
for their years of service to the community.
Renette Mazza (Class of 2018), and Jerry Fink
(Class of 2018) helped to coordinate the event.
Big thanks to the volunteers from Hamilton
Neighborhood Association, Boy Scout Troop
#248, Orange County's Credit Union, and
CSULB's Circle K International for their help to
build the urban forest in Long Beach.

teamed up with Housing and Neighborhood
Services and Litter Free Long Beach staff

13 tons of trash and dumped items and a -waste
from streets and alleys in the neighborhood.
Esmeralda Arguello (Class of 2017) also helped
out at the event. Volunteers reported 16 graffiti
tags during the event using the Go LB app.

Jerry Fink (Class of 2018), and Renette Mazza
(Class of 2018) from the Hamilton Neighborhood
Association helped to organize a tree planting
in June. The event was put together to
remember Sgt. Tim O'Donnell of the Long
Beach Police Department. Volunteers including
his family, friends, and co-workers planted 110
street trees in the Hamilton neighborhood.
Assemblymember Patrick O'Donnell, Chief
Robert Luna, and Commander Rudy Komisza
provided welcoming remarks, thanked all the
volunteers, and shared fond memories of their
brother and friend. The LBPD Police Officers'
Bureau staff helped clean the alley next to Star
King Elementary School, installed No Dumping
signs, and removed nine tons of trash an(
debris in one morning. The groups partnere(
to beautify the alley that children and families
walk through to and from school.
2019 NLP Alumni Support Team
Association grilled a hot dog lunch for all the
volunteers.

Alumni Support team held its first meeting it
preparation for the 2019 program year. 201 �
Team members had an opportunity to discus
shared team values, personal timelines and tc

also an opportunity to celebrate the birthdays
of two team members: Octavio Mojica (Class o-
2014) and Stacey Morrison (Class of 2015).
Housing and Neighborhood Services staff
partnered with the Orange County's Credit Unior
to plant several trees in the city in 2018. Dozens
of Orange County Credit Union employees hav(
volunteered at nearly every "I Dig Long Beach'
tree planting since 2013. Alumni employed b�
the credit union include Azul Sanchez (Class oji
2014), Maritza Avelar (Class of 2017) and Lupe
Gallegos (Class of 2018).
Griselda Barba (Class of 2003) and Sinara
Sagn (Class of 2018) conducted door-to-door
outreach to businesses and property owners on
Anaheim Street. The outreach was conducted
to inform the community about the Commercial
Improvement Rebate Program (CIRP). The
program provides rebates of up to $2,000 to
commercial property owners and storefront
business owners to improve storefront
businesses and correct code violations.

"The diversity of my neighorhood makes it very
special."
Emily Kiwa Tanaka - Class of 2011
"Belmont Heights is very quiet most of the day
except when the wild parrots take flight during
twilight. During the school year, children can be
heard and seen, making the area very family
friendly. Also the picturesque architecture
from 1910-30s along with well -manicured
landscaping makes biking and walking really
pleasant. The Bixby Knolls area was built out
after World War Two. The homes all looked
very similar then but what I appreciate is after
generations of families moved in and out of the
neighborhood many of the homes have been
modernized making the homes very eclectic.
My dad gardens at the northern border of Long
Beach at the strip of land bisected by Edison
powerlines. What makes this area special is the
open space available for urban agriculture and
farming. Peppered between the homes and
commercial buildings are several horse stables,
nurseries and community gardens. Its definitely
worth exploring if you fancy these things."

"The diversity within the Cambodia Town area
IN MEMORIAM
Concepcion Garcia graduated from the
Neighborhood Leadership Program Class of
2005. She recruited her friend (and next-door
neighbor) Esperanza Ochoa (NLP Class of 2005) to
participate and they both became more active in the
community. Concepcionjoined Esperanza atthe Day
of Discovery this year at the Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. statute to support her friend as Esperanza shared
her neighborhood problem solving experience and
wisdom with the Class of 2018. Esperanza served
as Concepcion's caregiver and fulfilled the promise
she made to Concepcion to be at her bedside when
she passed.
Teresa Gonzalez (NLP Class of 1992) remembers
Concepcion from the 1990s when she worked for
CSULB and she taught a pregnancy prevention
workshop with the Girl Scouts Troop at the Willmore
Police Center. Teresa and several NLP alumni
joined together to visit Concepcion at her home
every month with a group of ladies they called The
Cafecito Club.
Concepcion was a participant in the Center for Latino
Community's health evaluation leadership training
program, she served as a Steering Committee
Member of the Long Beach Alliance for Children
with Asthma and she was also a member of the
Building Healthy Communities Long Beach Steering
Committee. Last September, Concepcion was
honored with the Kimberly Maddox Legacy Award at
the Latina Women's Conference. Concepcion meant
so much to the Long Beach community and her
work made Long Beach a better place for everyone.

Sandra Johnson passed on March 7, 2018. Sandra
Andranetta Johnson was born in Cleveland,
Ohio on April 10, 1950. Sandra graduated from
the California State University, Dominguez Hills
with Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Public
Administration. In addition, she also completed a
five-year apprenticeship as a journeyman Pipefitter.
Sandra was the first African-American woman to
work as a Pipefitter at the Long Beach Naval Ship
Yard. She also worked as a Librarian at the Long
Beach Main Library.
Sandra Johnson graduated from the NLP Class
of 2009. After graduating, she recruited several
friends to participate and become more active in
the community.
Sandra was a Master Gardener and used her
knowledge of plants to help create community
gardens, including her team's NLP class project that
created a communitygarden ata vacant lot on Pacific
Avenue in the Wrigley Village Business District.
Sandra wasactive inthe West Long Beach Association
and Windward Village Home Owners Association as
their Vice President and Newsletter Editor. She also
organized the annual community fair.
Sandra also helped with taking care of Buddhist
senior citizens connecting them to social services.
She also assisted many people who were homeless
to access services and housing resources.
She will be missed.
