Carey Davis and City Council Members City of San Bernardino 290 North D St. San Bernardino, CA 92401 Dear Mayor Davis and City Council Members, The Fine Arts Commission (FAC), in an effort to foster a smooth transition and in anticipation of the creation, by the Mayor and City Council, of the Arts and Cultural Heritage Commission, respectfully recommend a budget funding stream of $300,000 be allocated and included in the City's 2018-2019 budget; earmarked for the Arts! We are aware that the 2018-2019 City Budget is currently in preparation, there will be budget workshops for the Mayor and Council, and that the final draft will be adopted late this spring, therefore, we feel it is imperative that the Fine Arts Commission, as its last action, request that an amount be included in the budget as an allocation to the arts in the city. The funds that were previously allocated to the Fine Arts Commission were from the Cultural Development Fund. That fund is now part of the General Budget, although the source still bears the name, "Cultural Development" Thus, we feel that it is important to continue to support the purpose of the fee that developers pay. Obviously, the new Arts and Cultural Heritage Commission formed by combining the Fine Arts and the Historical Preservation Commissions, will make their own recommendations as to how such funds should be spent. However, it is important that to continue the support of artists, art activities and art groups in San Bernardino, there needs to be money set aside for that purpose. This city and its residents need the arts to be part of its cultural and economic development. Sincerely, Gil J. Botello, Chairperson City of San Bernardino Fine Arts Commission cc: Andrea Miller City of San Bernardino City Manager c/o City Clerk's Office 1290 North D St., San Bernardino, CA 924011 P: 909-384-5002 I www.SBcity.org7
