DESIGNATING MONDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2016
AS
"JACK HILL DAY"
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill, born in Denton Texas, moved to San Bernardino, California with
his family at the age of six. He attended San Bernardino High School and starred on its 1941 football
team; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill served with distinction for 30 years active military duty during:
World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict, and as a member of the National Guard,
was called-up during the Berlin Crisis of 1961. For his performance and leadership abilities, he
attained the rank of Command Sergeant Major; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill co founded, and served as Commander of the Guy Winton Morris
American Legion Post; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill served as a Civilian Jet Engine Specialist maintaining the Titan II
missile at sites throughout the western United States; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill was elected the first African American President of the
San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill co-founded the Neighborhood Housing Services of the Inland
Empire, an organization central to the provision of affordable housing services and a key partner with
the City of San Bernardino; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill owned and operated Mr. Hill's Catering Service for over thirty
years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill served on the San Bernardino Public Library Board for twenty-three
years,fifteen of these as Board President, and, in his honor, the San Bernardino Public Library named
its Literacy Center: the Jack L. Hill Lifelong Learning Center; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill has actively served in numerous other community organizations,
such as: Board Member of San Bernardino Community Hospital and Spiritual Aims Chairman of the
Kiwanis Club of San Bernardino; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill, being a loving Christian, is an active member of New Hope
Missionary Baptist Church and faithfully attends Sunday morning services; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill was honored by being selected to participate from 9 October 2016
to 11 October 2016 on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. during which he toured the World War II
Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, and attended several veterans gatherings; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jack L. Hill, having led an exceptional life, has made extraordinary
contributions and provided exemplary service to the United States of America, and the City of
San Bernardino and its citizens -- whose positive impact will be felt far into the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, on behalf of the citizens of San Bernardino, the
Mayor and Common Council do hereby declare Monday, December 5, 2016 as
"JACK HILL DAY"
in honor of one of San Bernardino's truly outstanding citizens and a trailblazing model for others to
follow.
