Motion: Change the Council Meeting dates for the month of January, 2017 to
January 9 and January 23, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
Background
Current Charter Section 35 states:
"All meetings of the Common Council shall be public, and the regular meetings
shall be held on the first and third Mondays in each month, unless such days be
a legal holiday, when the meeting shall be held on the following day."
The new Charter that will become effective once the election is certified and filed with
the Secretary of State states:
"The Council shall establish by ordinance, the time, place and method of calling
meetings..."
In January 2017, this poses a logistical problem. The first Mayor and Common Council
meeting would be on January 2 - immediately after the holiday, during which people
from across the organization have scheduled vacation. In order to accommodate the
short staffing, the agenda for that meeting would need to be published on December 20.
The second Mayor and Common Council meeting falls on Monday, January 19 -Martin
Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.
The City Manager's Office has suggested that the MCC consider changing the two MCC
meetings in January to be held on the second and fourth Mondays of that month. If
approved, those meetings would be on January 9 and January 23.
