Synopsis: Metropolitan Opera National Council Western Regional
Auditions
The Western Region, one of sixteen, includes the state of California, Arizona, and Southern
Nevada.
The Metropolitan Opera Auditions, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties was formed in
1959: and is one of the six Districts representing the Metropolitan Opera National Council
Auditions.
The purpose of these auditions is to discover exceptionally talented opera vocalists for the
Metropolitan Opera.
These Auditions give our local singers an opportunity to compete and provides contacts with
producers and directors in the vocal concert structure.
1. The finalists of the local auditions compete in the Regional Auditions in Los Angeles
and attend a Master class at San Bernardino Valley college.
2. Several of the previous winners have successful careers with various National and
International Opera companies.

5 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS:

7 SECTION 1. The Mayor of the City of San Bernardino is hereby authorized
8
and directed to execute on behalf of said City an Agreement with the METROPOLITAN
9
10 OPERA, a copy of which is attached hereto marked Exhibit "A" and incorporated herein
11 by reference as fully as though set forth at length.
12 SECTION 2. The authorization to execute the above referenced agreement
13 is rescinded if the parties to the agreement fail to execute it within sixty (60) days of the
14 passage of this resolution.

3 THIS AGREEMENT is entered into between the CITY OF SAN
4 ERNARDINO, a municipal corporation, referred to as "City" and the
5 ETROPOLITAN OPERA, a non-profit organization, referred to as
6 'Organization. "
7 The parties agree as follows :
8 1 . Recitals .
9 A. Organization has requested financial assistance from
10 ity for the fiscal year 1998-99, in order to assist in defraying
11 he expense of certain concerts, shows, festivals, or events or
12 ctivities sponsored by Organization as set forth in Organization' s
13 grant proposal (hereinafter "the proposal" ) approved by the Fine
14 its Commission of the City. A copy of said proposal is on file in
15 the Mayor' s Office of Cultural Affairs . The terms of the proposal
16 are incorporated herein by reference and shall govern the uses of
17 the funds provided herein. The financial assistance provided for
18 in this agreement is made on a one-time only basis, and receipt of
19 said funds shall not imply a continuing obligation of the City
20 beyond the terms of this Agreement .
21 B. The expenditure is for a valid municipal public
22 purpose, to wit : for the promotion of art appreciation in San
23 Bernardino, as more fully set forth in the proposal submitted by
24 Organization.
25 2 . Payment . Upon presentation of a claim to the Mayor' s
26 Office, City shall pay to Organization from the

3 udget for the 1998-99 fiscal year, the total sum of $3 , 000
4 ollars, to cover the costs per the Fine Arts grant application
5 greement .
6 3 . Use of Funds . The funds paid to Organization shall be
7 sed solely for the purposes set forth in Paragraph 1 and in strict
8 ompliance with the provisions set forth in the agreement . No
9 eviation from the agreement shall be made without the express
10 pproval of the City of San Bernardino. Said funds shall be
11 expended by June 30, 1999, and any unexpended funds shall be
12 eturned to City by Organization.
13 4 . Accounting. Within 20 days after the completion of the
14 vent, the Organization shall submit to the Mayor' s Office, with a
15
copy to the Director of Finance, an accounting of the actual
16
expenditures connected with said event as it relates to the funds
17
hick were provided by the City. Financial records shall be
18
maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting
19
rinciples by Organization in such manner as to permit City to
20 easily trace the expenditures of the funds . All books and records
21 of Organization are to be kept open for inspection at any time
22 during the business day by the City or its officers or agents .
23 Failure to submit the financial records in accordance with this
24 section will result in the Organization reimbursing the City.

5 . Hold Harmless . Organization covenants and agrees to
26 defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the City and its employees and
27
agents from all liabilities and charges,

3 xpenses (including counsel fees) , suits or losses however
4 ccurring, or damages arising or growing out of the use or receipt
5 f the funds paid hereunder and all operations under this
6 agreement . Payments hereunder are made with the understanding that
7 he City is not involved in the performance of services or other
8 activities of Organization. Organization and its employees and
9 gents are independent contractors and are not employees or agents
10 f the City in performing said services .
11 6 . Termination. City shall have the right to terminate
12
his Agreement and any funding remaining unpaid hereunder for any
13
reason by mailing a ten-day written notice to Organization and this
14
agreement shall terminate ten days after the mailing of such
15 notice . In the event this Agreement is terminated for reasons of
16 improper use of funds or use of funds for any purpose other than
17 those authorized, any unexpended portion of the funds provided by
18 City shall be returned to City. In addition, Organization shall
19 reimburse to City any funds expended which were used for any
20 urposes other than those authorized under this Agreement .
21 7 . Assignment . Organization shall not assign its interest
22 in this Agreement without the prior written approval of City.
23 8 . Insurance . Organization shall take out and maintain
24 during the life of this Agreement such public liability and
25 property damage insurance as shall insure City, its elective and
26
appointive boards, commissions, officers,

3 gents and employees, Organization and its agents performing acts
4 overed by this Agreement from claims for damages for personal
5 - njury, including death, as well as from claims for property damage
6 hich may arise from Organization' s or its agents' operations
7 ereunder, whether such operations be by Organization or its agents
8 r by anyone directly or indirectly employed by either Organization
9 or its agents, and the amounts of such insurance shall be as
10 follows :
11 (a) public Liability Insurance . In an amount not less than
12 $1, 000, 000 for injuries, including, but not limited to, death, to
13 any one person, and subject to the same limit for each person, in
14 an amount not less than $100 , 000 on account of any one occurrence;
15
(b) Property Damage Insurance . In an amount of not less than
16 $50 , 000 for damage to the property of each person on account of any
17 one occurrence .

(c) Workers Compensation. Organization shall provide workers
19 compensation insurance in the amount required by state law if the
20 funds provided hereunder are to be paid as salary to any employee
21
of Organization. Organization shall require that all rights of
22 subrogation under such policy of workers compensation insurance
23 shall be waived as to City. City shall be set forth as an
24 additional named insured in each policy of insurance provided
25 hereunder.

(d) The Certificate of Insurance furnished to the City shall
27 require the insurer to notify the City of any change or termination
28
in the policy.

3 9 . Obligation. Organization hereby covenants that it has
4 aken all actions necessary to make the adherence to the
5 obligations imposed by this agreement a binding obligation of the
6 organization.
7 10 . Notices . All notices herein required shall be in writing
8 nd delivered in person or sent by certified mail, postage prepaid
9 addressed as follows :

14 11 . Entire Agreement . This Agreement and any documents or
15 instruments attached hereto or referred to herein integrate all
16 terms and conditions mentioned herein or incidental hereto, and
17 supersede all negotiations and prior writing in respect to the
18 subject matter hereof . In the event of conflict between the terms,
19 conditions or provisions of this Agreement, and any such document
20 or instrument, the terms and conditions of this Agreement shall
21 revail .
22 12 . Non-Discrimination. Organization agrees that for the term
23 of this Agreement it shall not discriminate in employment,
24 recruitment, hiring, admission practices, advertising or in any
25 other manner on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national
26 origin, sex, physical handicap, or marital status .

SECTION V - Summary of Project Description
The purpose of the National Council, of the Metropolitan Opera
1. Find exceptionally talented opera singers and to assist in their
development.
2. To discover new talent for the Metropolitan Opera.
3. To search for possible-participants in the young Artist Develop-
ment Program of the Metropolitan Opera /association.
4. To give singers an opportunity to be heard and encouraged in
their careers.
A special aspect of this program is the contacts with producers and
directors for programing vocal concerts and appearances with orchestras
and production events thus giving the singers experience in performing
and encouragement for further development and progress in meaningful
careers.

XII . Future objectives :
As availability of city funds will be increasingly restricted in the
foreseeable future, how does your organization propose to become more
self-sufficient?
Fund raising is an on going effort. We are at present making application for
grants from banks and businesses, and are making every effort to increase
funding from other sources in the communities such as substantial funding from
organizations and-corporations who would be interested in assisting such a '
program of' promoting the development of young talent in our area who have
considerable potential'. " We have continued to try to' increase the communi-
cations with such groups and it is our hope that as they see the results of
this -program we can convince them that this kind 'of' encouragement is valuable
to developing an 'appreciation- of this kind of music. We are doing everything
to promote appreciation in the communities for educational values of the
finest musical talent.

H I S T O R Y
The Western Region, one of sixteen, includes the states of California
ma, and Nevada. These states are divided into Districts; five in
California, one in. Arizona, and Southern Nevada, which is included in the San
Bernardino-Riverside Counties District. Each District is headed by a
District Director.
The first Western- Regional auditions were held in the 1956-1957 season,
when the region. was added to the Council's National Program. Mario and Ruth
Chamlee, who for many years were an the roster of principals stars. of. the Metro-
politan Opera, were asked to undertake the task of organizing the Region.
They asked Miss Gwendolyn Roberts to work with them to assist in setting up
the structure for the Auditions.
The first Auditions. wers held on December 7, 8, 14, 15, 1957, in Hancock
Auditorium of the University of Southern California. The Finals were held in
Santa Barbara at the Music-Academy of the West. Hundreds of voices were heard
and many fine voices were discovered.
The first winners were Grace Bumbry, Mary Costa, and Alfred Jensen (deceased) .
The role of winning singers through the years includes some of the most out-
standing singers of our time.
In 1959-1960, Gwendolyn Roberts, was asked to form a District for San
bernardino and Riverside Counties, as well as to continue to serve on the
Regional Auditions. This was done and the .Auditions have been held every
year since that time, under her supervisior;, and many fine singers have been
given the opportunity to. be_heard in this .manner-
Winners from the District are selected to proceed to the Regional Auditions
where singers are selected to go further in the National Auditions. A number
of singers from this District have received further recognition: Armando Sierra,
Tenor, went to the Region where he Won and was sent to the National Auditions,
winning an important Award; Karen Posten, Soprano, went on to sing with the
New York City Opera; Mary Heyler, Mezzo-Soprano, won second and third place
awards at the Regional Level; Della Dean, Soprano, won a substantial Scholar-
ship at the Regional-Level;. Keven .Sell, Bass-Baritone, won the Regional Com-
petition and was sent to the National Auditions , was a winner and sang on the
stage of the Metropolitan, had a debut at the New York City Opera and is now
singing a full schedule of leading roles with a number of opera companies;
Alejandro Guerrero, has sung with the Inland Empire Symphony and with the Western
7a Theater. Daniel Hendricks, Tenor, had his debut with the New York City

Opera last November-, and is now singing leading roles at the San 7rancisco Opera.

Please read carefully the list of singers and their professional activities
which has been given to you today... We are proud these singers and many others
who are singing major engagements now. Their careers started here with these
auditions and we want to give them support and encouragement.
Miss Roberts continues to direct the Auditions in this District where she
has secured community assistance and support for administration and for awards
for the singers who are selected. to be winners by the Judges who come from the
Los Angeles Area to adjudicate the Auditions.
Through tha. assistacce of an excellent committee of enthusiastic support-
ers,. this program continues to grow to be a. major advantage for our talented
singers.. Miss Roberts continues to invite and- encourage producers and conduct-
ors to hear the auditions and invite our singers to perform on their presentations.
NOTE: IMPORTANT NOTICE REGAROING MASTER CLASS FOR ALL SINGERS IN THE AUDITIONS.
On Sunday, October 29th, there will be a Master Class for all Contestants
in the -Auditions. The Master Class will be held at the- San Bernardino Valley
:ge in the Liberal Arts Building, Room #100,. at- 1:30 P.M. The clinician
whom I have arranged for this is Miss Mary MacKenzie, Contralto, She received
the NAUMBERG AWARD and the FIRST PLACE NATIONAL AWARD of the Metropolitan Opera
Auditions, and sang with the Metropolitan Opera for several years. She received
the Sullivan Award and was twice selected for the MARTHA BAIRD ROCKEFELLER GRANT.
She has sung and performed as guest soloist with most of the country's Symphony
Orchestras and presented recitals throughout the United States and England.
Stravinsky chose her to. sing the role of Jocasta in "Oedipus Rex" under his baton
in Santa Fe, and Copeland invited her to sing the role of the Mother in "The Tender-
land", when he conducted. his opera in Tanglewood, in addition to her work at the
Metropolitan Opera. She is listed in "Who's Who in California" for 1989 and 1990.
and was selected "Outstanding Professor"of the Music Department at San Diego
State University in 1990.
.The Master Class is open to the Public and you are encouraged to bring your
friends. The class will start at 1:30 P.M. and we will hear all singers perform.
This is done informally, andis particularly important for those who are chosen
t- jo to the Regional Auditions in Los Angeles.

small admission fee will cover the cost of the refreshments.

Section V11 NEED STATEMENT
Due to the fact that each District is required to finance its awn needs
' awards and administration, we need funds for:
1. Awards for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and a possible 5th place winners and
for Study Awards.
2. Many of our expenses this year will be increased. We need' funds
to pay rent of auditorium at Sturges for the recital hall and other
facilities, and at San Bernardino Valley College for the Master Class;
Stage Hands (required by auditorium) ; an 11,000,000,0OO Insurance for
Liability (required by the City) ; Accompanists, Printing of Letter-
heads, envelopes, Programs, Brochures, Aaplications, Pasgage, Office
Supplies, Printing of Forms for the Singers and Judges; Telephone Calls;
for refreshments for Reception during Judges deliberations; for our
Master Class for the singers the following week; etc.
3. We need funds for the expenses of. the singers who are sent to the
Regiznal Auditions in Los Angeles, as they are required to stay in the
Hotel for one or tuo nights due to the -Regional Schedule, and each
District takes their winners to dinner.

We will be holding a Master Class for all of the singers in the District on
October 25, 1995, at San Bernardino Valley College with a major vocal authority
as a clinician, thus giving our singers added assistance in preparing for the
Regional Auditions in Los Angeles. The ,,inners of these Regional Auditions
will go to New York to compete in the . National Finals and Winners Concert on the
stage of the Metropolitan Opera House.

Following his success in the National Metropolitan Opera Competition
he had his DEBUT WITH THE NEW YORK CITY OPERA IN THE ROLE OF
SPARAFUCILE IN "RIGOLETTO". IN SEPTEMBER 1997.

LORRBINE BAEZA, Soprano. District First Place Winner, Regional Finalist in 1991
She has since been touring with Western Opera Theater of San
Francisco in the opera "La Sobeme" in the leading role.
She is also studyinc for her doctors Degree at University of
Southern California.
DIANE J=NNINGS, SOPRANO. District First Place Winner and Regional Semi-Finalist, 1502.
She has since been sinoino in Europe.
She took the course in Graz, Austria and was made a member of the
Bavarian State Opera in Munich. She was a permanent member of the
Munich Company, but has now accepted a contract with the Opera in
Salzberg, singing leading roles.
She has been leading soprano With tue Aachen and Bielefeld companies
as well.
She is also singing guest engagements in Munich and several
European countries.
ALEJANDRO GUERRERO, TENOR. District winner and Regional Semi-Finalist in 1992.
He sang: Cavaradossi in "Tosca" with North Bay Opera in 1992
Rodolfo in •me Bohene with the Boise Opera in 1991.
He sang Foust with the West Bay Opera in 1991.
He sang Alfredo in"La Traviata", AND Hoffmand in Tales of Hoffman
with the Merin Opera in 1990.
He sang Tenor Solos in "Messiah" with the Utah Symphony and with
Los Angeles Master Chorale in 1990.
He is now pursuing a solo career in Europe ' with some, coming successes

DANIEL HENDRICK, TENOR District First Place Winner, Regional Winner in
1966.
He received enthusiastic critic in the Baltimore Business
Journal far his role of Macduff in the opera nMacteth'1
by Verdi with Jerome Hines'. He has just had his debut
with New York City Opera in Faust as Mefistafels,
Cavaradossi in Tosca, and Pinkerton in Madams Butterfly.
He has sung leading Tenor roles with Vancouver Opera,
Colorado Opera, Riverside Opera, Virginia Opera, Mexico
Opera, San Diego, Opera Pacific, and San Francisco Opera.
He has sung concerts with San Diego Chamber Orchestra
Redlands Bowl, Palm Springs Opera Society, Metropolitan
Winners Concert in San Diego, and performances of the
Messiah with orchestra.
Daniel returned to New York City Opera in March and sang
additional leading roles for the season.
Daniel is presently singing Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor .
with San Francisco Opera, and will be returning just in
ti7.e for a concert on- the San Bernardino Valley Concert
Series on December 12, 1995.
MATTHELI BITITTE, TENOR District First Place Winner in 1987, and Regional Semi-
Finalist.
He is now busy singing in opera companies in Germany and
France.

He has sung leading roles in Andrea Chenier" , "Lucia di
Lammermoor" , "un 62110 in MasChera" , with the Riverside
Opera.
He has sung cne role of Monterone in "Rigoletto" with the
Merole Opera in San Francisco.
He has sung Count Paris in "Romeo et Juliette" , Sicario and
Aoperition in "Macbeth" . Ficrelio and Figaro in "Berber
of Seville" , with the CHICAGO LYRIC OPERA.
He has suno leading roles with the San Francisco Opere,
Philadelphia 0-ere and the Revinie and Tanglewood Festivals.
WAYNE SHEPPERD, BASS BARITONE District First Place Winner and Regional Semi-
Finalist in 1984 and 1986.
He has sung leading roles with the Inland Opera Company of
Redlands and Sen Bernardino.
He is now a regular member of the Los Angeles Music Center
Opera Com::anv where he sings compramario roles for Bass-
Baritone.
NMON FORD-LEVINE , TENOR District First Place Winner in 1993, Was one of the winners
in the Western Reqional Finals.
He has performed for Lonb Beach Opera, Euterpe Opera Theater ,
Southern California Opera Guild, Opera West and the Carmel
music Society.
His roles includ Mpx in "Der Freischutz" ; Lensky in "Eugene

Onecinj ; Samson in "Samson at Dalils" ; Alfredo in "La
Traviete"; Maurizio in "Adrieca Lecouvreur".
He was a First Place winner in the Los Angeles Young Artists
of the Future Voice Competition.
He was a Finalist in the McAllister Award3 Competition of
the Indiana Qpera Theater; Miami Opera Association; The'
Young Musicians Foundation; the National Association of
Negro Musicians William Grant Still Society.
He received his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees
in Vocal Arts from the University of 5outhern California,
where he was named Outstanding Vocal Arts Graduate for
both degrees.
He has been accepted by the Tchaikovsky Vocal Competition
One of five sent from this Country to Russia. He will be
in Moscow in July to compete and participate in that great.
