HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-Announcements Mayor's EMS Transport Monthly Update (to be read 12/16/96)
Since city-operated EMS transport was approved in October, we have
been making swift progress towards running our own emergency
ambulance service. At this time, I want to update the Council and
community regarding some of the steps we have taken in the past
month:
Our EMS consultant, Jim Page, is continuing to oversee the
implementation of this service. A team of City department
heads and staff has been meeting with Mr. Page regularly to
keep this process on track and on schedule.
The ambulances are now being custom built in Florida. The
first ambulances will be delivered here March 1, and all eight
ambulances will be delivered by April 1.
We are now recruiting for the EMS Division's Program Manager.
This person will head the new division's management team. We
expect to have that person on board by March 1997 . The
recruitment for the remaining positions will begin shortly.
A total of 24 new employees, including 18 paramedics, will be
hired for the EMS division.
Arrangements are being made to accommodate offices for the new
staff at the main Fire Station. A professional space planner
was brought in, and plans are now being drawn up to locate the
EMS division in the existing office space.
We are already planning for ways to make our EMS service the
highest quality operation possible. On November 27, we hosted
a workshop with Dr. Jeff Clawson, who is the Medical Director
for the Salt Lake City Fire Department and the father of
modern EMS dispatch techniques. Dr. Clawson made a
presentation on a system he has developed called the Advanced
Medical Priority Dispatch system. This system uses
dispatchers to give lifesaving instructions before help
arrives. Our EMS division will soon be exploring the use of
this new standard of patient care.
We are also working on a public education campaign that will
inform San Bernardino residents about our emergency
transportation service. Community groups will be able to
invite a speaker from our Speaker's Bureau to come and speak
about EMS. The Fire Department and Channel 3 are also
producing a series of Public Service Announcements, as well as
a 30 minute educational program. All these programs are
designed to make sure that all San Bernardino residents are
well-informed about our EMS service.
