BACKGROUND On 7-21-97, the Mayor and Common Council ratified the City of San Bernardino's budget for FY 1997/98. The Police Department's Asset Forfeiture Fund covers the entire cost of cellular telephone services for the department. Council approved $30,000 for this expense under account #108- 271-5155. This amount covers additional and replacement costs of telephones, repairs to telephones, and monthly billings. An additional $13,600 will be needed to cover the expenses through June 30, 1998. The increase is due to six additional telephones being placed into service during FY 1997/98 and a total average monthly billing rate for all cellular telephones of $3,400. FINANCIAL IMPACT The funding to cover the increased cellular phone cost for the remainder of FY 1997/98 will come from the Asset Forfeiture Fund balance. Asset Forfeiture revenue awarded to the Police Department is deposited into the Asset Forfeiture Fund until the Mayor and Common Council authorize appropriation of the funds. The Police Department will include the appropriate cost for cellular telephone services in the proposed budget for FY 1998/99. RECOMNMNDATION That the Mayor and Common Council approve the Police Department's request to amend the FY 1997-98 Asset Forfeiture budget by $13,600 to cover the increased cost of cellular phone usage.
