Smith is a native of Los Angeles, California and was educated in the public schools there, He received his A-A. Degree from South hest Junior College. He went on to obtain his Bachelors Degree in Communications and Religion from Azusa Pacific College. He attended Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio and the University of Southern California. He also attended Turner Seminary at Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received his Master of Divinity Degree. Rev. Smith was licensed to preach in 1977 at First AME Church, Los Angeles, California; obtained his Itinerant Deacon in the Southern California Annual Conference; ordained Itinerant Elder in the Southern California Conference in 1982. He completed the U.S. Naval Chaplain 's Commander School in Newport, Rhode Island. He was commissioned in the rank of Lieutenant in 1983. He served in Okinawa, Japan, Korea, and Sari Diego, California before an appointment to Bethel A.M.E. Church in Spokane, Washington_ He pastored there for three years. While there he served on the Mayor 's Task Force to select the city 's police chief, Rev. Smith completed the Veterans Administration Chaplain's School in Hampton, Virginia in Tuly, 1989_ He then accepted a special appointment to serve at the Veteran 's Administration Hospital in Chicano for a year. He has served as a V.S. Naval Hospital Reserve Chaplain for over eight years_ He has served on numerous task forces, such as the Child Abuse Task Force for the U.S, Naval Hospital , Ad Hoc Committee against Crime, as well as other boards and committees_ During the riots in Los Angeles he was instrumental i n organizing local ministers in Kansas City in order to speak out on some of the issues facing Black people. He was interview on a regular basis on these issues. Additionally, he has taken additional training i n alcohol and drug abuse and additional training in cancer treatment- while in Kansas City, Rev. Smith was awarded a scholarship by the Kauffman Foundation to participate in a Leadership/Community Development Program. After completion, he created a plan to provide strategies for utilizing his learning to enhance the effectiveness and to create positive efforts in addressing the needs of the community. Rev. Smith pastored Olive Chapel A.M.E. Church in Kirkwood, Missouri , Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Kansas City, Missouri before coming to St. Wd�l 7 Paul A.M.E. Church in San Bernardino, California in October 2997_ In January he was invited and gave a sermon at the Anneal Martin Luther King Breakfast which was highlighted on Channel 4. Zt was at this breakfast Pastor Smith was made known in the community. Since coming to St. Paul , the church has flourished and membership has .increased_ Pastor Smith feels this his move to St. Paul has truly been a blessing and has great aspirations for the church Pastor Smith is currently Pursuing his Doctorate at the McCormick Theological Seminary. Rev_ Smith is married to Rev.
