Residents claimed that the intersection is unsafe and requested that the City install a stop sign for northbound traffic to alleviate the situation. Staff conducted an engineering study to evaluate the intersection based on established guidelines. Currently, there is a stop sign for southbound traffic; the other two approaches are uncontrolled. The major concern is that the southbound motorists, while stopped at the intersection, are unable to see oncoming northbound traffic. The visibility restriction is caused by vertical and horizontal curves. To resolve this situation, residents requested the installation of a stop sign for northbound traffic. The Traffic Safety Committee evaluated this request at their meeting of February 10, 1999. The Committee concurred and recommended that the City install a stop sign for northbound traffic. Additionally, for consistency and to avoid any confusion over which motorist has the right of way at the intersection, it is also recommended that eastbound traffic be stopped. This will create a three-way stop at the intersection. Financial Impact: Funding for installation of the signs and pavement markings will come from the general fund's signing and striping materials account no. 001-187-5111. This action is considered routine; consequently, there will be no major impact to the account. Recommendation: Adopt Resolution authorizing the installation of a 3-way stop at the intersection of David Way and Mariposa Drive.
