Description) M.I.S . Fund and Police Asset Forfeiture Funs Finance: / • Council Notes: 75-0262 Agenda Item No CITY OF SAN BERNAV"INO - REQUEST FOF COUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT The Police Department was previously unable to keep an acceptable amount of data on-line due to limited space on the old computers. On the new systems, the Police Department has been able to catch up on the two year backlog in the Records Division. Also, Computer Aided Dispatch incident histories are being retained on-line for a longer period of time. This allows reports and inquiries to be made without waiting for data to be reloaded from tape. The Department's files are now extremely large and growing rapidly. The cost of a disc drive has recently dropped from $20,000 for a 1 gigabyte (approximately one billion characters of data storage) drive to only $10,100 for a 2 gigabyte drive, (2 billion characters) . The Police Department proposes to purchase 1 drive using $10,100 of asset forfeiture funds. M.I.S. recently sold some old equipment, unused since new systems were purchased. The old equipment sold for $12,000. M.I.S. would like to use $10,100 from this sale to purchase a second 2 gigabyte drive for the benefit of the Public Safety computers. M.I.S. would issue a request for a single source purchase order to Digital Equipment Corporation who manufactures these drives. $10,100 of the $12,000 would be appropriated to account 679-000-30405, the remaining $1,900 to account 679-103-55486. The Police Asset Forfeiture Account is 108-000-30405. The additional 4 gigabytes (4 billion characters of storage space) will allow the Police Department's files to grow at the current rate of speed for an estimated timeframe of approximately 2 more years without storage space concerns. 5.0264
