HomeMy WebLinkAbout04.0- Presentations IF RESOLUTION of THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL HONORING AND COMMENDING THE HONORABLE RIKKE VAN JOHNSON MAYOR PRO TEMPORE 6TH WARD COUNCIL MEMBER Whereas, Council Member Rikke Van Johnson has honorably served the citizens of the Sixth Ward from March 1, 2004 to March 7, 2016. He was first elected to City Council on November 4, 2003 and re-elected on November 6, 2007 and on November 8, 2011; and Whereas, Council Member Johnson is a 54 year resident of San Bernardino. He'is a graduate of Eisenhower High School in Rialto, CA and has an Associate of Arts Degree from San Bernardino Valley College, where he graduated in 1981. Council Member Johnson retired from the United States Postal Service after 27 years of service and is presently employed as a Bail Agent and Manager for Greenwood Bail Bonds in San Bernardino; and Whereas, during his tenure on the Common Council, Council Member Johnson has served as Mayor Pro Tempore for three terms and has served on numerous City Boards and Committees, including Ways and Means, Legislative Review, Personnel, Grants Ad Hoc, Education Bridge, RDA Committee, Inland Valley Development Agency, San Bernardino Airport Authority and the San Bernardino Economic Development Corporation; and Whereas, Council Member Johnson's leadership skills made possible accomplishments such as the completion of the Palm Avenue Bridge, the State Street Bridge, Branding of the Historic Route 66 Emblem, the Cajon Business Center. New businesses opened include: Hewlett Packard, FedEx, Smuckers, LEED Silver, Michelin Tires, Auto Zone, Walgreens, McDonald's, Amapola's Expansion, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Waba Grill and the soon to be opened 7-Eleven. Other new projects include: The Magnolia at Highland Senior Apartment Complex, a new community center and splash pad at Anne Shirrells Park. Further, Council Member Johnson partnered with Council Member Virginia Marquez to establish the Hometown Military Banner Program. He also created the Citizen of the Month Program to recognize citizens making a positive impact to the community; and Whereas, Council Member Johnson's leadership and wisdom helped the Council to move forward during challenging times. His compassion helped bring our community together during times of sorrow. His genuine friendship and humor made it much easier for his Council Staff to perform their duties during stressful times; and Whereas, Council Member Johnson's gift of public service to our City would not have been possible without the loving support of his beautiful wife Sharon, his daughters Monique and Erika, his son Julian, and his five granddaughters, Kiara, Savii, Amarie, Elona, and Anaya. NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Mayor and Common Council of the City of San Bernardino do hereby honor and commend COUNCIL MEMBER RIKKE VAN JOHNSON for his outstanding and exemplary record of public service to the City of San Bernardino and to the citizens of the Sixth Ward. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors, you will be greatly missed. He attended Banner Elementary School in Highland, Rodriquez Prep Academy, and will graduate in June 2016 from San Gorgonio High School. Kyle's dad, Kevin Horn, is a retired construction manager and his mom, Theresa, is a Registered Nurse at Kaiser Permanente in Fontana. His sister, Ashley, is married with two children and now resides with her family in Tennessee. His dog Yogi is a Yorkie. Kyle is the secretary of Key Club, an organization on campus that is sponsored by Kiwanis. As a Key Club member, he volunteered at Highland Family YMCA events on the City of Highland clean-up days. Kyle is also the vice president of the Calculus Club and a member of the "G Crew" (students who mentor the freshmen students). Kyle played football for two years. Kyle's favorite classes are Math and Science. He plans to attend either the University of Washington, San Diego State or UCLA with a future career goal of becoming a Registered Nurse or a CRNA (Anesthesiologist).
