Description) Finance: Council Notes: M 75-0262 Agenda Item No. CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT GUADALUPE FIELD - NAME CHANGE TO "SAL SAAVEDRA FIELD." Guadalupe Field, a 2.25 acre little league ballfield located at 8th and Roberds Streets has been called by this unofficial name since acquisition of the property. The field was called "Guadalupe" simply because of its location near the Guadalupe Church. At the December 1995 meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission, Mr. Art Campos presented a request and a petition with approximately 300 signatures of area residents in support of changing the name of Guadalupe Field to "Sal Saavedra Field" in honor of Mr. Sal Saavedra, a community leader who has made tremendous contributions of time and energy to the youth sports community, and in particular, to the Guadalupe youth leagues for the past 27 years. A copy of the request and justification for renaming the field is attached. The petition showing the signatures of support is on file in the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. The Park and Recreation Commission voted to support the request and in their Minutes of the Regular Meeting held on December 21, 1995, the Commission recommended to the Mayor and Common Council that Guadalupe Field be renamed to "Sal Saavedra Field" in honor of Mr. Saavedra." Department Staff fully supports changing the name of the field in honor of Mr. Saavedra and recommends that the request be approved. guad.fldNameChange 1/3/96 December 8, 1995 TO: ANNIE F. RAMOS Parks and Recreation Community Services Department We the undersigned, request that the Guadalupe Field be renamed as the Sal Saavedra Field. This would be in recognition of his dedication, commitment and support towards the youth and the community associated with the Guadalupe Field. Mr. Sal Saavedra has experienced an outstanding career of playing baseball and other sports, beginning in Junior High, then High School, then Army Service and Post Military years. He then proceeded to become intensely involved in youth sports for a time period of the next 27 years. From the years 1968 through 1995, he has been successful in keeping at least five thousand or more youths interested in the sport of baseball, thereby keeping them off the streets. This would also include the active volunteering and participation of hundreds of parents/volunteers in various duties within the Little League. This most deserving and outstanding citizen has coached with Little League, Catholic League and Winter League. He has competed against the Leagues of Moreno Valley and Coachella Valley All Stars Pony League. He has won the Section Championship a total of two times. Through his leadership his teams have successfully claimed victory in the Guadalupe Division a total of five times. Within the Guadalupe League his teams have triumphed in eleven championships! His teams has played so well and have been so very successful that they have run out of competitions to play in. Through Mr. Saavedra's efforts and coordination abilities, the Guadalupe League and field were successfully built. In the 1992 our Nominee, Mr. Saavedra, began coaching the "Giants" and also sponsored this youth team for twelve years. From 1990 to 1992 our Nominee was elected and served as President of the League. In years past our Nominee was inducted into the Southern California Hispanic Athletic Hall of Fame. These are some very important reasons that we are requesting that the current name of Guadalupe Field be renamed the Sal Saavedra Field.
