This program was undertaken to cleanup solvents that are in the groundwater within the Bunker Hill Basin. The Water Department entered into a Cooperative Agreement with the EPA to act as its contractor for certain activities necessary to implement the cleanup program. Specifically, the Water Department will be responsible for any land acquisition, pipeline installation and well drilling. Contaminants within the basin have reached as far south as the Baseline Street area and the recommended project is to drill five (5) wells to pump the contaminated water from the various strata and create a barrier preventing the contaminants from migrating any further into the basin. This pumping of contaminated water will occur for a period of up to thirty (30) years. We have negotiated the purchase of a portion of 1295 West 48th Street for one of the well locations. Once we are fully funded for construction of the wells, we will improve the property to become an asset to the area. The Board of Water Commissioners, at their meeting held on January 23 , 1996, approved the acceptance of the Corporation Grant Deed, and authorized staff to submit it to the Mayor and Common Council for approval. It is recommended that the resolution be adopted accepting the Corporation Grant Deed and dedicating the property for Water Department use.
