The city of San Bernardino's crime rate showed an
unprecedented decline in 1995, a new comparison report from the San
Bernardino Police Department shows.
Part 1, or violent crimes, dropped by 12 . 69 percent during
1995, the report says.
"We have never had such a high drop in crime in the city of
San Bernardino. With the public perception being that crime is
getting worse, it is great to be able to show our community that
things are getting better, " Assistant Police Chief Wayne Harp said.
Every Part 1 crime category showed a drop in 1995, including
murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, thefts and
auto theft.
The biggest drop was in the number of rapes, which were down
by 34 . 42 percent. Other large reductions include aggravated assault
by 27. 84 percent, burglary by 18 percent and murder by 15. 38
percent.

"This is extremely encouraging news for the City of San
Bernardino, as well as for our police officers, who have done an
excellent job. As a department, we will continue to work to keep
our residents safe and reduce crime even further, " Chief Lee Dean
said.
Mayor Tom Minor believes that with the continued efforts of
Police Department programs like Operation Safe Streets, and City
programs such as code enforcement and the Rental Housing Program,
the city of San Bernardino will continue to see its crime rate
drop.
"I am very optimistic that we can reduce the crime rate even
more in this community, " he said. "Our residents are tired of the
crime, and they want to see things changing. I am so glad to be
able to finally tell them that things are changing. "
