at the 40th Annual Conference on Neighborhood Concerns in
Houston,Texas,May 20-23,2015.

The primary goal of the NUSA conference is to promote and o
provide opportunities for neighborhood leaders to network y
and develop ideas and best practices so they can build stronger
communities back home.In addition to the wide range of

across the United States when we present our annual awards in

With the world around us changing in the blink of an eye,neighborhoods across the nation face new CO
challenges and threats every single day.That's why the annual NUSA conference is such a great resource

for everyone.Just like it has been at our previous 39 conferences,this year's gathering in Houston is a o
wonderful opportunity for all neighborhood leaders to keep up with those changes,respond accordingly ml
and embark on new journeys. o
For me,this will be my 11th NUSA conference,and at every one of those conferences I always learn about L
new programs to bring back to my home city of Columbia,South Carolina and ideas on how to put my a,
passion into action.
I
During my time as a dedicated neighborhood leader back home,and in my travels across the nation to 0
conduct neighborhood-related workshops or deliver keynote addresses,I have often been asked,"What
makes a neighborhood great?”While many might answer with responses like reinvestment,low crime or CO
well-maintained infrastructure,I believe that the answer is more simple. Z
So,what makes a great neighborhood?The answer is great neighbors.
Thank you for being a great neighbor.Thank you for taking on the fight to create the change we need to
make life better for residents of your community.Thank you for the strength,courage and commitment r
you demonstrate every day to create a better tomorrow in every neighborhood. Q
