In 2002, recognizing the need for women to be reunited with their children,A New Way of Life opened a second home to house women with children. A New Way of Life now operates a total of 4 sober living homes for formerly incarcerated women and children who would otherwise be homeless, and Qoffers a wide range of support services to help facilitate their successful transition back to community life. rr —JI ' ! '' ' A New Way of Life Reentry Project is unique in that its Q Founder and Executive Director, Susan Burton, as well as Z 1,111 most of its staff, are themselves either former prisoners or Z Q recovering addicts who understand first hand the chal- lenges that women face leaving prison. After spending J ' l , more than 20 years trapped in the criminal justice system, LL Susan gained freedom and sobriety in 1997 and has since 4. O dedicated herself to helping other women to break cycles Qof incarceration, homelessness, addiction and despair. Su- san and the New Way of Life staff, Board, and graduates are role models who provide compassion, direction, and W hope to women who most need an opportunity to start a Z new life. As we move forward into 2007, A New Way of Q Life will continue to expand, develop, and advocate for much needed infrastructure to support more compre- hensive reentry services in California. MISSION A New Way of Life Reentry Project helps women and girls break the cycle of entrapment in the criminal jus- tice system and lead healthy and satisfying lives. GOALS • Provide a clean, safe, sober-living home environment where women who would otherwise be homeless and their children can feel welcomed and supported in their transition to becoming independent mem- bers of the community. • Offer education, job training and skill-building opportunities for women to build confidence, develop leadership, and prepare them for self-sufficiency. • Provide leadership as a community advocate for the rights of prisoners, former prisoners and their families. ORGANIZATIONAL VALUES 1. We believe all people, including prisoners and former prisoners, are valuable and should be treated with dignity and respect. 2. We believe that prisons and punishment are not effective tools for positive change and that treatment better serves the person and society. 3. We believe everyone who is given a chance, regardless of the past, can excel with community interven- tion and support. 4. We believe in the power of mentoring to help people achieve their dreams. By motivating, supporting, and creating opportunities for others to excel, mentors are valuable role models that build the confi- dence and self-esteem of their mentees. 5. We believe in the ability to empower people by educating them about systems of societal dysfunction, thereby transforming their understanding of themselves and their community.
