She has worked in the Emergency Department of d San Antonio Community Hospital for eleven years. The past four years she has v been a MICN- Mobile Intensive Care Nurse(the liaison nurse between field a paramedics and the emergency department). Currently she is the Paramedic E Clinical Coordinator at Crafton Hills College. Additionally, she is an instructor c there for the Mobile Intensive Care Nursing program. In addition to her RN a certification she is also a certified Mobile Intensive Care Nurse and has a BS Degree in Nursing. She holds instructor certificates for the following: • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support • Pediatric Advanced Life Support • Inland Counties Emergency Medical Agency Skills and Field Care Audit Packet Pg.78 S.F.a. Having these certifications will allow Ms. Crews to be an instructor for many of the classes that are required of the Fire Department's EMTs and Paramedics. The department will realize cost savings by not having to hire outside instructors to teach these classes. Budget Account Number • 001-200-0044-5011 Justification/Reason for Request o w N The Fire Department's EMS Coordinator is a vital component of the Fire Department. °a This position is responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of the emergency medical program. This includes scheduling required training for all Fire Department N employees,meeting deadlines regarding documentation and contracts, staying current a with changes in the EMS protocols,preparing an annual budget,purchasing and maintaining EMS supplies,equipment, and medications. The EMS Coordinator must = also attend local meetings to support or propose policy changes with area fire departments,hospitals, and other local EMS agencies. ¢ d The Fire Department's EMS program is currently being managed by a part-time EMS o Coordinator working three days a week averaging 24-28 hours per week as the full-time positon has been vacant since January 1,2014. Carly Crews has been working in this °- part-time positon since July 7,2014. It has become apparent to staff that a full-time M position is needed to properly manage the Fire Department's EMS Operations. The Fire Department's 14/15 budget included filling this position full-time. An EMS Coordinator r working full-time will be able to more effectively manage and coordinate the time 00 consuming and complex tasks required to keep the Fire Department's EMS Operation running efficiently and properly. A full-time EMS Coordinator will also have the ability to plan ahead and forecast upcoming changes to emergency based medicine. This will allow the Fire Department's EMS Operation to make changes as necessary for the v; improvement of patient care. 3 d L U Ms. Crews applied and went through a standard recruitment process. After the recruitment process and two oral panel interviews, City Civil Service and City Fire E Department, Carly was found to be the most qualified candidate. Fire Chief Paul Drasil has requested and received approval from the City Manager to fill ¢ the Emergency Medical Services Coordinator position. This position does not require Personnel Committee action.
