The Clean Cities Program is a national program sponsored by the United States Department of Energy. It is designed to accelerate and expand the use of alternatively fueled vehicles in urban communities and to encourage the development of refueling and maintenance facilities to support these vehicles. Oil May 5, 1994, SCAG's Regional Council elected to seek designation of the Clean Cities Program. SCAG desires to provide support to cities which enter into this program through the following steps: 1) Coordinate information among cities on alternative fueled vehicle purchase opportunities; 2) Increased access to state and Federal grants and funds promoting alternative fuels; and, 3) Technical assistance to both the public and private sectors regarding alternative fueled vehicles. Designation of the City of San Bernardino as a member and supporter of the Clean Cities Program will provide the following benefits: 1) Enhance the City's competitive position regarding the South Coast Air Quality Management District's Heavy Duty Vehicle Alternative Fuel Demonstration Grant; 2) Demonstrate support for regional efforts to reduce air pollution through alternative fueled vehicle technologies thereby improving the quality of life for City residents. There is no fiscal impact as a result of enactment of this designation. Staff recommends adoption of the attached resolution. i J m/-es R. Howell Director of Public Services
