Council Notes: 75-0262 Agenda Item No. . 39 ti diTY OF SAN SERNARDINO - REQuesT FOR COUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT A letter was received from Joanne Aguilar, Palm Avenue parent, relative to several safety concerns in the vicinity of Palm Avenue Elementary School. One concern was over parents stopping on the south side of Belmont Avenue to load and unload their children. In response to this letter, our Traffic Engineering personnel conducted an investigation into the situation on Belmont Avenue. This investigation revealed that there is a pedestrian gate (for access to the school) , located about 400 feet east of Palm Avenue. Also, there is considerable traffic on Belmont Avenue during the tides that children are arriving and leaving school. After reviewing the information collected in the course of the investigation, we concluded that parking should be pro- hibited on the south side of Belmont Avenue, within 200 feet of each side of the pedestrian gate. It is felt that prohibiting parking for this 400 feet would encourage parents to stop near Palm Avenue, where there is a 4-way stop and school crosswalk, or near Churchill Street, where there is a school crosswalk. At their meeting of 4-10-96 , the Traffic Safety Committee concurred with the recommendation to prohibit parking. No adverse impact is expected to be created by this parking prohibition, since there are no residences fronting on this section of Belmont Avenue. We recommend that the parking prohibition be approved. 4-29-96 75.0264 is -1-11H:)anH:) W oLij wQ z }- o W W Q ° Q z LLJ Z Y Z Ur J z N ' 3 Q cn WI 0 00 ao 0 O Z Y cr —1 W = o ° ac cn u - Q U o v a c W C m O x x w w O O N = AV Wdd t-- 1 0 z
