WILHELMINA RICKS DATE : March 15, 1996 COPIES : Oscar Perrier, Senior Recreation Supervisor ------------------------------------------------------------------ A resolution from the City of San Bernardino is requested through your office to honor Ms . Wilhelmina Ricks as the City of San Bernardino Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department' s Senior Citizen of the Year for 1996 . Ms . Ricks was selected from a field of distinguished seniors previously recognized through this department' s S i.or Citizen of the Month Program. —� Insofar as May is designated as Senior Citizens Month, the time and place for presentation is recommended to be a // 9 . 00 a.m. , during the Common Council meeting scheduled for Mond y, May 6, 1996 . The other Senior of the Month recipients will be requested to attend. May I suggest that sometime during the cer mony, they be asked to stand for recognition. i In addition, it 4s anticipated that her elected officials will tender instruments'--of recognitio noring Ms. Ricks . For brevity, it is suggested that convey these, without a reading, on a summary basis. Thank you for your support in making this day of recognition for Ms . Ricks one to be remembered. It is a period when special efforts are made to impress upon employers that Veterans make good candidates for employment because of their valuable experience, skills and training. The campaign also help to promote and publicize the employment services and programs that the Employment Development Department offers veterans, and that veterans receive priority of those services . To assist our office in promoting "Hire-A-Veteran Weeks " we request the attached proposed proclamation be issued to urge all local employers, organized labor, veterans organi- zations , and other government leaders to support this campaign to increase employment opportunities for the men and women who have faithfully served our nation in the military. FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS ONE OF OUR PET ORGANIZATIONS THAT WE'VE WORKED WITH IS THE SAN BERNARDINO POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION/COPS FOR KIDS AT CHRISTMAS, LAST YEAR WE HAD A BAKE SALE AND SOLD TICKETS FOR AN EASTER BASKET DRAWING,ALONG WITH DONATIONS PUTTING NAMES ON A LARGE EASTER EGG AND DISPLAYED THROUGHOUT TTAE CLUB. THE RESULT FROM THIS FUND RAISER WAS OVER$2000.00, WITH THE MATCHING FUNDS GIVEN BY THE WAL-MART FOUNDATIONS THE AMOUNT EQUIVALATED TO OVER$4000.00_ DUE TO THE THIS SUCCESSFUL.FUND RAISER, ALONG WITH THE OTHERS IN THE YEAR WE WERE ABLE TO ACHIEVE OVER 50%OF OUR DIRECT CONTRIBUTIONS ACCOUNT AND 50% OF OUR MATCHING FUNDS GRANT, THIS MADE US ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE A BONUS CHECK FOR AND ADDITIONAL $3000.00 TO BE GIVEN TO THE ORGANIZATION OF OUR CHOICE. OUR DECISION THIS YEAR WAS TO GIVE OUR BONUS CHECK TO THE COPS FOR KIDS,SO THEY MAY HAVE A HEAT) START ON THEIR YEARLY FUND RAISING.
