CALIFORNIA 92503 / (714) 689-1146 March 17, 1993 Honorable Mayor Bob Holcomb City of San Bernardino San Bernardino, CA 92418 - Dear Mayor Holcomb: - Thank you for your kind letter of March 15th regarding my Special Event Request for the use of City Streets and Police Staff. I am proceeding with the permit application as you advised, poste haste. Please consider this letter to be a formal request of you and the Common Council for the waiver of any fees for the necessary City staff. This is a non-profit effort which I have been funding from my own pocket and conducting in recogni- tion of our Nation's 2.1 million nurses, the very forerunners of our troubled health care delvery system. As a California Board of Registered Nursing approved provider of nurses con- tinuing education and a member of the American Hospital Association, I've worked closely with nurses for well over a decade. I know of the personal sac- rifices they make to assure patients in their charge receive the very finest care, both physical and emotional, they can possibly provide. It was such de- votion that compelled nurses to continue to help my family in their efforts towards my unique recovery after doctors prognosed my condition as terminal. For a 65-yr-old man with no feeling or sensation in either foot or legs, its going to be a long, long run on May 9th from the San Bernardino County Medical Center to the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Hospital in Loma Linda. I'm going to need everyone of those nurses support and encouragement to make it. And they, and I, will need all of the support your City can provide to assure the success of this event which has already drawn the attention of the White House. After a brif ceremony and introductions, the run will begin on Sunday, May 9, at gam at the San Bernardino County Medical Center, proceed dawn Gilbert to Waterman, then down Waterman to Barton Road and over to the VA Hospital. We need a police escort to block each intersection just long enough for the group to pass. No lengthy street closures should be required. Loma Linda City is arranging for the safe passage of the group when it reaches their community. mMO lt i el)y,. D res Fer on MAR 2 2 1993 President CMF/gjn OFFICE OF THE MAYOR Encl.
