Subject:
Authorization to Advertise for Bids - Sewer in Edgemont Drive - "I" Street to Palm Avenue.
Backeround:
The Department of Public Services notified the Development Services Department of an unknown sewer line in
Edgemont between "I" St and Palm Avenue. It would appear that homeowners installed a rather long sewer
lateral within the City right-of-way. The sewer line is located behind the curb and within the parkway under
several very large trees and may have been in this location for 25-30 years. Recently, there have been
complaints on the performance of this sewer line and Public Services has spent many hours attempting to clear
the roots and re-establish the line. In April 1998, Public Services made a request to correct the problem line with
construction of a new sewer line located in the street itself, as is the normal practice. The line serves three homes
presently but may be able to serve additional homes in the area and will be extended accordingly with this
construction.
Development Services has prepared plans and specifications for construction of the new sewer line and
connection of the existing properties to the sewer line. Complete sets of the specifications and locations are in
the Development Services Department for review. The project is now ready for advertising; funding for the
construction was included in the adopted budget.
Below is the estimated cost for the construction:
Construction Contract $31,450
Engineering/Inspection $ 3.00 0
Subtotal $34,450
Contingencies (15%) $ 5,550
TOTAL $40,000
Financial Impact:
Funding for this contract extension is contained in the adopted budget under account 245-365-5504-7134 in an
amount of$75,000.00. We have since found a less expensive way to correct this problem; however, this is only
the Engineer's Estimate and not a contractor's bid price, which may be higher.
Recommendations:
Staff recommends approval of the Specifications and authorization to Advertise for Bids.
