Authorization to establish a two-way stop at the intersection of 19th Street and Lugo Avenue.
Backl!round:
The Traffic Engineering Section received a petition from residents of Lugo Avenue between 16th
Street and 19th Street requesting speed bumps along their street.
Although the City has not historically installed speed bumps for a variety of reasons, staff placed
the item on the Traffic Safety Committee agenda in an effort to get input from the residents. The
Committee reviewed this issue at their October 11, 2000 meeting. The request for the speed
bumps was denied; however, in the course of the investigation it was noted that the intersection
of 19th Street and Lugo Avenue is currently uncontrolled and has limited visibility in the
northbound direction.
Staff felt this situation could be resolved by installing a stop sign for northbound traffic. For
consistency, a stop sign for southbound traffic was also recommended since the intersection has
a slight offset. The Committee concurred with Staff s findings and therefore recommended that
stop signs be installed for north and southbound traffic at the intersection of 19th Street and Lugo
Avenue.
Financial Imnact:
The estimated cost of $ 400.00 for installing the new "stop" signs will come from General Fund
Account No. 001-187-5111 (Signing and Striping Materials).
Recommendation:
Adopt Resolution establishing a two-way stop at the intersection of 19th Street and Lugo Avenue.
The attached Resolution also contains the following corrections: stop signs on Belle Street and
Flores Street on the approaches to 19th Street were installed as a result of a previous Council
Action, and stop sign(s) on "F" Street's approaches to 19th Street were also approved, however,
this intersection no longer exists and has therefore been omitted from this Resolution.
