According to Mike Page, director of governmental and external affairs, the grants support Verizon's principal areas of focus. "Literacy, domestic violence prevention and technology access are the underpinnings of all our grant-making," he said. "Verizon is fully committed to supporting organizations that are making inroads in these important areas." The following organizations received grants: Option House: $24,000 to fund two outreach prevention programs; a youth program and a men's domestic-violence education program. Asian American Educational & Cultural Resource Center: $20,000 to provide vocational English-as-a-second-Ianguage and computer-skills training classes to approximately 90 parents of economically disadvantaged children at NOllh Park Elementary School. . Verizon News Release, page 2 Libreria Del Pueblo Inc.: $20,000 to train approximately 200 low-income and underserved residents with technology-based training in the usage of computers and current technologies that will promote the use of English, self esteem and employment. Applied Principals for Service Inc.: $18,000 to provide public-safety education campaign to parents and teens in the proper use of cell phones, text messaging and the Internet. San Bernardino Community Hospital: $35,000 to purchase broadband technology that will enable hospital staff to offer access to treatment programs and educational information for children with asthma. San Bernardino Sexual Assault Services: $45,000 to assist victims of domestic violence by teaching them to be self sutlicient and helping them to find employment so that they can live a healthy lifestyle lor themselves and their children. San Bernardino City Unified School District: $50,000 for the creation of a digital classroom that will provide teachers with a chance to learn about and practice using classroom technology.
