Truancy Abatement Program

The City of Albany's Truancy Abatement Program will serve all school-aged youth in the
City of Albany. Department of Youth and Workforce Services directs the program whose
goal is improved school attendance, reduced juvenile crime and increased parental
responsibility.
The Truancy Abatement Program is a partnership involving the City, local schools,
Albany County Probation, The Albany Police Department, community agencies, and is
funded through New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. The program's
focus is to improve individual student attendance. Daily morning home visits will be
conducted when a child exhibits a pattern of poor attendance. In addition, if a child is
out of the classroom during the course of the school day, and does not have a valid pass
or parent note, he or she will be escorted back to their respective school. The parent
will be notified immediately. A follow-up evening home visit will be initiated by a
Probation Officer and Juvenile Detective. School and Truancy Center staff will follow-up
with appropriate support services and aftercare.
The program will run throughout the school year (September- June).
The Truancy Abatement Center is located at the Department of Youth and Workforce
Services, 175 Central Avenue; Albany, New York.
Research has shown that poor attendance correlates with juvenile crime and violence,
school failure, and risky behaviors such as alcohol and drug use. The Truancy
Abatement Program will address truancy in a collaborative and timely manner, while
holding children and their families accountable for absences. The initiative is designed
to promote school attendance by assisting in the enforcement of regular attendance in
the City of Albany, and to prevent children from being involved in the criminal justice
system. Services will include assessment, counseling, referral, and aftercare to youth
and their families.
