STAFF REPORT Hillcrest Park, a 1.5 acre neighborhood park site located on Hill Drive at Acacia, has been called by this unofficial name since the initial Hillcrest Development built the houses in that area and dedicated the park in lieu of Park Development Fees. The park was called IIHillcrestll simply because of it location. ". At the September meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission, Mrs. Karen Newberry, 5805 N. Acacia Street and Mrs. Dianne DeSario, 5851 N. Acacia presented a petition with approximately 277 signatures in support of changing the name of Hillcrest Park to IIMelissa and Bradley Newberry Memorial Parkll in memory of two neiahborhood children who died recently in an automobile accident. The petition and a letter requesting the name change are on file in the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department Administrative Office. Both Mrs. Newberry, a relative of the deceased children, and Mrs. DeSario spoke in favor of making it a memorial park and requested the support of the Commission in recommending the new name to the ~'ayor and Common Council. The Park and Recreation Commission voted to support the request and in the Minutes of their meeting made a recommendation to the Mayor and Common Council that the park name be changed to IIMelissa and Bradley Newberry ~.1emorial Parkll. LIo It is anticipated that, if the present schedule is maintained, construction of the park will begin in November with construction work and contractor maintenance period to be completed in April 1989. A dedication ceremony could be arranged for late April or early ~1ay 1989. Department staff fully supports changing the name of the park in memory of the children and recommends that the request be approved. Park names have been changed in the past or named to honor the memory of various individuals. Example: Rio vista Park to Anne Shirrells Park Shandin Hills Park to LionelE. Hudson Park Verdemont Park to Al Guhin Park and most recently Speicher Park. October 10, 1988 75-0264
