This is two months ahead of schedule. There are no funds in the current budget for sta ffi ng. The proposed 87/88 Fi re Department budget conta i ned funds for six month's staffing. However, due to the uncertainty of a comple- tion date and the need to reduce the budget, those funds were cut. The following two items need to be addressed in relation to this situation: ITEM #1 Fifteen personnel will be hired to staff Station #11. Ten will be required to attend the eight week Fire Academy. The other five have already received academy training and will require only a one week orientation before going on shift. It is recommended that the personnel needi ng to attend the academy be hi red on May 12 when the academy begins. The cost will be $27,200 to July 1. The others will be hired on July 1, 1988. ITEM #2 Once the station is completed and accepted from the con- tractor, which will probably be by May 1, 1988, I feel that a crew should be assigned on an overtime basis to staff the station. It will be difficult to maintain security; but more important, a vacant "I fire station will appear that the City is not meeting its commi'tjn.e.R-t---..... ,6~DOO to provide fire protection to the area. This cost will be ~,OOO for one engine crew, consisting of a captain, engineer, and fire fighter, from May 1 to July 1. The paramedic squad will be put in service July 1, 1988. o M. NEWCOM~~~ Chief .
