The San Ben1arclino Black History Parade Committee, Inc. (BHPC), a non-profit
organization, was fourrled in 1968 by a small group of concen1ed citizens. The
purpose of the organization is to foster an interest arrl a greater understanding
of Black culture, to heighten COIm11llI1i.ty awareness of the aCCOl'l'plishments arrl
achievements of Black people, past arrl present, arrl to coordinate arrl direct the
planning arrl implementation of an annual Black History month (February) parade.
In addition, a major objective of the organization is to bridge the gaps that
exist across cultural lines by bringing the local conununity together in the
spirit of unity arrl brotherhood.
To enable us to prepare for our 1987 festivities, furrling is e5PeCially
i.np:>rtant. The parade arrl attendant activities have grown larger arrl more
expensive to support. Financial requirements exceed $20,000 each year. In
recognition of how i.np:>rtant these activities are to the COIm11llI1i.ty, we ask that
the City of San Ben1arclino contribute $7,500 towards this year's activities.
Your investIoont in this truly COIm11llI1i.ty outreach effort will go a long way
helping us unite the city in the spirit of brotherhood.
Beginning in February 1969, with only twenty-one entries, the San Ben1arclino
Black. History Parade has grown, in 1986, to aver 300 entries; arrl was viewed by
aver 20,000 spectators.
since the first parade, a rnnnber of other cultural events have been added arrl
also sponsored by the Black History Parade Camnittee, Inc. (BHPC). These
include:

'!hese activities alcn:J with the parade provide area residents an excellent
opportunity to gain exposure to positive role m:xiels fran the business,
p:>litical, sports am entertairnnent iniustries am fields. Past parade grarxi
marshals have included Los An;Jeles Mayor Tan Bradley, Muhammad Ali, Redel Foxx,
Debbie Allen, am Oyeyode Oyesosin, II, K:irg of Nigeria.
Because these activities take place directly in the "minority" canununity, area
merchants experience an increase in business from the large numbers of partici-
pants am spectators att.erx:lin:J planned events. In addition, those in the
canununity who are disadvantaged or hcmeboun:i benefit as the events are brought
directly to their door steps; this avoids the additional hardship traveling to
another location could cause.
The San Bernardino Black Histo:ry parade am related cultural activities have
become a major am integral part of the Inlam Errpire's obsex.vance of Black
Histo:ry month. In fact, the parade itself has became the largest single Black
Histo:ry event in the state.
The City of San Bernardino has the OPPOrtunity to provide the resources, in-kind
sexvices am expertise required to assist in continuing this worthwhile
community project. '!he future will be even brighter with your help; our theme
this year is "A City United".
