HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamation Record-A-Thon WHEREAS, More than a million people in the US are legally blind and one out of every five Americans has a learning disability, research in the field of print disabilities indicates that by grade four, without the benefits of recorded books, many students with print disabilities have already failed, reducing their self esteem and turning them into non-readers; and WHEREAS, For 58 years, RFB&D has been an invaluable educational resource, enabling those with print disabilities to complete their education, advances their careers, and gain self-esteem, Students with print disabilities such as blindness or dyslexia can benefit greatly from recorded textbooks that help them achieve their goals for academic and professional achievement; and WHEREAS, Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D) is the nation's educational library for people with print disabilities and provides textbooks in every subject area and grade level, studies indicate that students who use RFB&D's textbooks achieve significant results, including improvement in reading speed, content acquisition and reading comprehension; and WHEREAS, These books are read and recorded by more than 7,100 volunteers, including 250 here in through the Inland Empire/Orange County Units with recording studios, and more than 11,575 students in California already benefit from the use of RFB&D 'S recorded textbook. NOW, THEREFORE, I, PATRICK J. MORRIS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM RECORD-A-THON WEEK APRIL 23-29 And urge the citizens of the City of San Bernardino to support RFB&D 's unique work to make education accessible to all students regardless of disability.
