CI,c,OF SAN BERNARDICD - REQUEO' FOR COUNCIL AC'ryN OUT OF STATE TRAVEL - JUNE BASTAJIAN, RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM DIRECTOR, TO ATTEND SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS ON RECRUITING AND WORKING WITH VOLUNTEERS - PORTLAND, OREGON STAFF REPORT During evaluations and inspections of the City's Retired Senior Volunteer Program by ACTION, it was requested that the Program Director, June Bastajian, receive continuing training in the changing trends affecting volunteer pro- grams. Mrs. Bastajian has the opportunity to attend a convention in Portland, Oregon, at no cost to the City, which offers the following topics: Changing Volunteers: Profiles and Expectations Support systems for short- and long-term volunteers How to attract and effectively involve volunteers Working with a volunteer profile How to retain volunteers Working With Diverse Populations Making a committment to pluralism Understanding various race, ethnic, and cultural differences Working with community based organizations Workshops in: Hispanic Black Korean Cambodian Filipino Vietnamese Central American Chinese Native American Contemporary Issues: Trends and Changes Affecting the Volunteer World What are current issues and trends What motivates volunteers Pressures for funding Background and lifestyles of volunteers Why a Board of Directors? Board matters and Management matters Membership approval areas Financial submissions Powers retained by Board Members By-laws Accountabil i ty This training will greatly benefit the RSVP by giving the Director the increased and continuing training suggested by ACTION program evaluators and will benefit our City program by providing new methods and ideas for recruiting more volunteer participation, particularly in the minority segments of our population. In addition there will be training in identifying and mobilizing support from a variety of public and private sources and establishing financial goals. The knowledge acquired in this training, when integrated into our ongoing pro- gram, will enhance the future operations and will be a definite benefit to the City. September 24, 1987 75.0264
