Kramer FUNDING REQUIREMENTS: Amount: None Source: Finance: Council Notes: 75.0262 Agenda Item No ~~ . - CiTCoF SAN BERNARDI to - REQUE!O FOR COUNCIL ACTON RESOLUTION NAMING THE TRACK AND FOOTBALL FIELD AT DELMANN HEIGHTS IN HONOR OF STAFF REPORT LUDIE TAYLOR At its Regular Meeting of June 16, 1988 the Park and Recreation Commission conducted a Public Hearing to name the track and football field at Delmann Heights Community Center in honor of Ludie Taylor at the request of representatives of the Delmann Heights community. The ,representatives presented a letter (attached) outlining LudieTaylor'saccomplishments and contributions to the community. Also presented was a petition with over 200 signatures supporting the naming (on file). The Commission voted unanimously to recommend to the Mayor and Common Council the naming of the track and football field at Delmann Heights Community Center in honor of Ludie Taylor. The department is familiar with Mr. Taylor's background and accomplishments and wholly endorses the naming. Prior to and after his eq>loyment, Mr. Taylor volunteered tI\JIleI'OUS hours ~ with the children, youth, and adults in the total San Bemardino ('nmnuty, and particularly to those residents of the West San Bemardino neighborhoods. He was the first Cnmn1llity Center Manager for the De1mann Heights Cnmn1llity Center, and as such pioneered a I1UIber of programs in that cnm-1Ility. }o'oll~ his pralDticn to Recreatioo Supervisor, Ludie was still able to oversee and planmmy organized leagues that provided WIo1esane recreational opportunities for the youth of the Coomlnity. A fonner professional basketball player, Mr. Taylor coached rn.mJeI'OUS teams that provided sane of the areas top athletes; he served as a referee, uq>ire, and volunteered in several sports worlting with both UBles and fE!IIB1es. He often reached into his own pocket to pay expenses for teams or individuals. In addition to the above, Ludie was a meuber of AnErican Legioo Post 710 and an officer in Elks Lodge 8%, l\bere he helped organize the youth Antlers Guard, and other youth programs. A long time resident of the Delmmn Heights area, Mr. Taylor could often be fotmd at the Delmmn Heights Camunity Center or Athletic fields observing and counseling. He is a legendary figure within this ('rmTl1Ility and there is a swell of support in doing scmething to appropriately honor his mem:lry. The recent caJil1etion of the Delmmn Heights football field and tre.ck seems an ideal time and opportunity. We are reCOllIlBld:i.ng that the City recognize the achi~ts of Mr. Taylor by naming the field after him. A copy of a Council reso1utioo, and other supporting data can be made available for those desiring additional infornation. The dedication cerEllalY is tentatively set for July 30, 1988, and we are hopeful that the Ccmni.ssioo and City Council will concur with this reC'l"l'flfll>n.dation. RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO NAMING THE TRACK AND FOOTBALL FIELD AT DELMANN HEIGHTS COMMUNITY CENTER THE "LUDIE TAYLOR TRACK AND FOOTBALL FIELD." o o BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Recitals. (a) The Delmann Heights Community has requested the City to name the track and field at Delmann Heights Community Center the "Ludie Taylor Track and Football field." (b) The late Ludie Taylor was an employee of the San Bernardino City Parks and Recreation Department from 195B until 1973. Prior to and after his employment, Mr. Taylor volunteered numerous hours working with the childre , youth, and adults in the total San Bernardino Community, and particularly to those residents of the West San Bernardino neighborhoods. He was the first Community Center Manager for the Delmann Heights Community Center, and as such pioneered a number of programs in that community. Following his promotio to Recreation Supervisor, Ludie was still able to oversee and plan many organized leagues that provided wholesome recreational opportunities for the youth of the community. (c) The City desires to name the track and football field at Delmann Heights COlTJ11unity Center the "Ludie Taylor Track and Football Field" in recognition of Ludie Taylor's dedication and devotion to the youth of the Delmann Heights Community. SECTION 2. Implementation. The track and football field at Delmann Heights Community Center is named the "Ludie Taylor Track and Football Field", and a sign indicating such shall be prominently displayed at said center. I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was duly adopted by the Mayor and Common Council of the City of San Bernardino at a meeting thereof, held on the day of , 1988, by the following vote, to wit: AYES: Council Members NAYS: ABSENT: The foregoing resolution is hereby approved this , 1988.
