Contact person: Anne Rhodes Phone: 5057 Supporting data attached: Yes Ward: FUNDING REQUIREMENTS: Amount: -0- Source: Finance: Council Notes: 75-0262 Agenda Item No, r CloO OF SANBERNARDQo - REQUIOr FOR COUNCIL ACQoN STAFF REPORT The following equipment needs replacement at the Senior Citizen Center kitchen: 1. One high temperature (boosted) commercial dishwasher. 2. One one-horsepower commercial disposer. The equipment to be replaced is located at the Senior Citizens Service Center, 600 West Fifth Street, San Bernardino, CA 92410-3289. This city-owned and operated facility serves as a central kitchen for seven existing Senior Nutrition Program sites with two additional sites to be added within 30-40 days. Subject equipment has been in daily service for almost nine years and is rapidly approach- ing the limit of its useful service life. Specifically: The gas heated (boosted) high temperature dishwasher's functional components have become severly corroded and leak badly. During the previous year repair costs exceeded $500. Staff was advised by the repairing technicians that this category of expense would continue and/or increase due to the need to replace additional components. The time to procure and install failed parts is resulting in work stoppages and/or the need to apply manual dishwashing procedures. The heat rise during this unit's operation is extensive and it uses considerable energy. It leaks water on the floor and otherwise creates a poor working environment from a safety perspective for operating personnel. The disposer has also been in service for almost nine years. It has low power, is slow in grindi.ng,waste, and jams constantly. The jamming causes work stoppages and the remedial measures required to un-jam and clean out the unit results in a most unsanitary situation in the washroom which, in turn, results in additional cleaning of the work area. Recommended Replacements: (literature attached) (prices have been coordinated with City Purchasing Agent) Dishwasher: Stero, single rack, chemically sanitized, energy saving dishwasher, Model SC-20-4A Costs: Unit Price $2,895.00 Tax 173.70 Installation 500.00 Total $3,568.70 Disposer: Costs: Unit Price $ 765.00 Tax 45.90 Installation 150.00 Total $ 960.90 In summary, the costs for both units, installed, total $4,529.60. There are no other monies allocated in this year's austere budget for replacement. In careful consideration of the critical category of the equipment, the increased number of Senior Nutrition Program meals to be served, energy cost reduction, sanitation, safety and the potential for the additional years of service replacement would permit without excessive maintenance costs and work stoppages, request favorable consideration for this one-time only funding at this time Attached is a letter from OOA and equipment descriptions. 75.0264 . .', 'AUe: 1 p 1988 OFFlCPON AGING 0 0 '~\\"'(If~/ COUNTY OF SAN 8~RDINO , ,~ .ty. ~/ HUMMI RESOUllCES AGENCV '''''7!:;:':~;~~' - ,~p.:., ~." Pichette, Ph.D. Director, Office on Aging County of San Bernardino 686 East Mill Street San Bernardino, CA 92415-0640 Dear Dr. Pichette: This application is submitted on a contingency basis at this time in order to be on record as needing the' equipment stated below. City policy is to obtain appro- val for' such applications upon direction of Mayor and Common Council. Insofar as the time between notification and deadline for submittal of the application precluded this process, the pr'oposal will be submitted to Mayor and Common Council for their approval on September 8, 1986. Application is hereby submitted for' California Department on Aging, Category 2, one-time-only funding to replace the following equipment: 1. one high temperature (boosted) commercial dishwasher 2. one one-horsepower commercial disposer. The equipment to be replaced is located at the Senior Citizens Service Center, 600 West Fifth Street, San Bernardino, CA, 92410-3289. This city-owned and operated facility serves as a central kitchen for seven existing Senior Nutrition Program sites with two additional sites to be added within 30-40 days. Subject equi~nent has been in daily service for almost nine years and is rapidly, approaching the limit of its useful service life. Specifically: The gas heated (boosted) high tempel'ature dishwasher's functional components have become severly corroded and leak badly. During the pl'evious year repair costs exceeded $500. Staff was advised by the repairing technicians that this category of expense would continue and/or increase due to the need to r'e- place additional components. The time to procure and install failed parts is , () o o o Kathryn II. hellet!.e, Ph.D flugus!. 29, 1986 l-'agl~ 2 I'..,sul ting in wor'k stoppages and/or the need to apply manual dishwashing proce- dur'es. The heat. rise during this uni t' s operation is extensive and it uses con- sidel'able energy. 1 I. 'leaks water on the floor and otherwise ct'eates a poor wOI'king envir'omnent from a safety perspective for operating personnel, The disposer has also been in service for almost nine years. It has low power, is slow in grinding waste, and jams constantly. The jamming causes work stoppages and the remedial measures required to un-jam and clean out the unit results in a mo:;;t unsanitary situation in the washroom which, in turn, results in additional cleaning of the work area. Recommended Replacements: (literature attached) Dishwasher: Stero, single rack, chemically sanitized, energy saving dishwasher, Model SC-20-4A Costs: Unit Price Tax Installation $2,895.00 113.10 500.00 Total....$3,568.10 Disposer: Costs: Unit Price Tax Installation $ 165.00 45.90 150.00 Total. . . . $ ,,960.90 In summary, the costs for both units, installed, total $4,529.60. There are no other monies allocated in this year's austere budget for replacement. In careful consideration of the critical category of the equipment, the increased number of Senior Nutrition Program meals to be served, energy cost reduction, sanitation, safety and the potential for the additional years of service replacement would permit without excessive maintenance costs and work stoppages, request favorable consideration for this one-time-only funding at this time. ;;;:1~ ~ Annie F.
