On May 8, 1986, an energy audit was conducted at this facil-
ity by Pamela O'Neill, Energy Consultant for Southern Cali-

The results of this audit, along with their recommendations
and estimates of potential energy savings, are attached.

However, as indicated on the attached audit, the (19) suspend
ed heaters in the bay areas of the Garage consumes the
majority of gas energy at this facility, In order to control
this usage, the Energy Consultant, Energy Auditor, and the
Energy Conservation Committee recommends installation of
three hour spring-loaded timers on each suspended heater to
prevent misuse. The installation of air curtains on all 28
external garage doors to prevent heat loss is also recommend-
ed. the installation of air curtains will not only save
energy, but will improve working conditions in the bay areas.
The estimated cost to install spring-loaded
curtains is $13,500 with an estimated rebate

investment is appropriately 16 months.

is not accomplished prior to peak heating season, funding of

Dear Mr. Murphy:
-
A gas energy aooit was recently coriducted at yoUr facility at
182 N. Sierra Way, San Bernardino.
The attached report lists the e:;{uipnent surveyed and the current gas
consumption levels for the equipnent. Also inc100ed is a list of
recarmendations which could aid you in your energy conservation
efforts. The estirrated energy savings associated with each of these
recarmendations has also been included. Although some portion of
these reccmnendations rray already be part of your present energy
IlBnagement program, they are included to reinforce the importance of
continued efforts to conserve energy.
..
It must be enphasized that the potential savings quoted are
estimates only and that we cannot be certain how incorporation of
these recarrnendations will affect the operation of your equipnent.
We appreciate your cooperation during the survey and we will be
checking with you in the future on the progress of your energy
IlBnagement program.

REalMME!\VATIONS FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION,
REXDolMENDATIONS FOR SPACE HFATERS
Set thenrostats to 68 degrees F. during the oormal INOrking hours of
the heating season. Be sure thenrostats are not affected by lamps
or drafts. Reducing thermostat settings can result in a 4% savings
for every degree lowered.
If possible, completely shut off space heating equipment (especially
the pilots) during the sumrer months. On cool sumrer morni.ngs,
oonsider circulating outside air (if it is warmer) into t!(e building
instead of relighting the heaters. Shutting off pilots during the
sumner can save 7-8 therms/month/pi1ot. Consider replacing oontin-
uous pilots with intermittent ignition devices (lID's) to get this
savings 12 months a year. Ranember thi s when buying new app1 iances .
Inspect roof or ceiling insulation to see that it meets, or surpasses
an R-19 factor. Add insulation if you are below this factor. Insu-
lating ceilings which have little or no insulation can reduce space
heating requirements by 10-20%.

weatherstrip/caulk windows and OOors and any other leaks in the
heated building shell. Keep all windows, <Dors, and other cpenings
to the outside cloSed as much as possible during the heating
. season. A "tight" building shell can save 5-10% of heating energy.
Establish a re<Jular inspection and maintenance schedule for the
total heating system.
.
Reduce or eliminate heating in ~pied zones. 'l'bis practice can
often yield a 10% savings, depending on the area eliminated.
Keep all furnace filters clean. Replacing or cleaning of furnace
filters re<Jularly can save between 7-14 therms/year/furnace.
Regularly clean and adjust gas burners' to maximize Combustion effi-
ciency .
Install metal lock boxes on all thermostats.
Install spring-load timers with three to five hour time increment on
all suspended heaters to keep usage to a minimum.
Install air curtains on all external garage <Dors to prevent heat
loss.

REI::O"+IENDATIONS FUR BOILERS
On a frequently scheduled basis, clean and adjust the burnerls),
utilizing a flue gas analyzer or oxygen trim system to maximize can-
.oostion efficiency. In order to help you keep your burners groperly
adjusted, the Southern California Gas Canpany offers free canoostion
training seminars and some in-plant adjustment demonstration services.
Call for more details. Energy savings is usually between 3-6%.
Investigate using water treatment for your steam cleaner to help
prevent scale formation.
REXno1:101ENDATIONS FOR WATER HFA'l'ERS
Investigate deliming your water heater to decrease lime b6ild-up and
improve heat transfer efficiency. Water heater deliming can save as
much as 10-15% of 10Bter heater energy consumption.
