STAFF REPORT
The Children's Services Supervisor. Mes. Cynthia Olsen. of
the San Bernardino Public Library has been selected by the
Putnam & Grosset Group Awards Selection Committee as one of
four recipients in the nation of a 1988 Putnam & Grosset
Award. The award was granted to her to allow her to attend
the annual conference of the American Library Association in
New Or'leans from July 9 through July 14. 1988.
At their regular meeting of March 10. 1988. the Library
Board of Trustees approved the SUbmission of Mrs. Olsen's
nomlnatlon for the award with the proviSO that should she
receive the award. the balance of her expenses to attend the
conference would be covered through the Library's Meetings
And Conferences account.
The awards are granted to children's librarians who are
members of the American Library Association. who actively
work with children in the course of their day to day
actiVities. and who have never had the opportunity to attend
a prior annual conference. The four 1988 award reCipients
Will be recognized at the annual bUSiness meeting of the
Association For Library Service To Children at the
conference. and they will also be honored at the prestigiOUS
Newbery/Caldecott Awards Banquet.
The award IS a Significant honor both for Mrs. Olsen and the
City Of San Bernardino as a whole. The expenses have been
budgeted within the Library's FY1988-1989 budget proposal.
NOTE: It is imperative this action be added to the June 20
agenda of the Mayor & Common Council to Insure Mrs. Olsen
adequate time to make the necessary travel arrangements.
