Description) Finance: Council Notes: Agenda Item No.~D S /.3.//01 CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Staff Report Subiect: Request to rename the Perris Hill Senior Center Dining Room, the Jack and Fay Rodgers Dining Room, in honor of Jack and Fay Rodgers. Backl!:round: In response to citizen's requests through the petition format, the Senior Affairs Commission has endorsed and the Park and Recreation Commission has unanimously approved renaming the Perris Hill Senior Center Dining Room to "The Jack and Fay Rodgers Dining Room". The Park and Recreation Commission has directed that the renaming request be forwarded to the Mayor and Common Council for consideration. Fay and Jack Rodgers were instrumental in establishing the Perris Hill Senior Center. Through their efforts in lobbying citizens and elected officials they informed and educated the populace to the need for a senior facility in its present location. Both Fay and Jack were recipients of the Departments Senior of the Year Award and received proclamations attesting to such from the Mayor and Council. Fay Rodgers served as the first chairperson of the Senior Affairs Commission (1987-1996), and in the same capacity as a member ofPerris Hill Senior Center Advisory Committee. Jack Rodgers was the volunteer accompanist to the Prime Time Choraliers, a group of senior songsters, sponsored by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. Jack also served as financial officer for the Perris Hill Senior Center Advisory Committee and was very instrumental in raising funds for that group. Those funds are well used to provide needed equipment at the Perris Hill Senior Center. Fay Rodgers served with distinction as a California Senior Legislator representing the interests of seniors in the San Bernardino area. In November 2000, Jack Rodgers passed away. Fay Rodgers is in poor health and has been forced to cease her many community involvrnents. Financial ImDact: None Recommendation: It is recommended that the Perris Hill Senior Center Dining Room be renamed in honor of Jack and Fay Rodgers for their untiring and lifelong contributions to the San Bernardino community. , Honorable Mayor and Common Council 300 North D Street San Bernardino, Ca. I April 2001 Dear Honorable Mayor Judith Valles and Common Council Jack and Fay Rodgers have been pillars in our community for many a year. Jack Rodgers a retired professional musician, volunteered for years as the accompanist to the Prime Time Caroliers, a group of 50-plus seniors, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. He volunteered his skills at a variety of senior events by playing the piano, such as senior centers anniversary celebrations, spring fashion shows, and other senior center special event. This past November 2000, Jack answered God's call. Jack had served his time here on earth with his loving wife Fay and their children. It was now time to go to his Heavenly reward. I like to think of Jack teaching angels and the baby's yet to be born, his musical skills, Fay was not only a loving wife and mother, but she had many other hidden talents. She is a retired schoolteacher and principal. I have always said, "Teach our children not only the four R's, but also to be loyal citizens, as some day we will have to live under the laws that they will make." Fay was the 8th grade teacher of our Honorable Mayor, Judith Valles. For Fay, retirement didn't mean sitting home knitting. In 1984 she suffered a stroke that kept her hospitalized more than two months, and confined to a wheelchair for several more. Fay's answer to the stroke was, "You know you can be an invalid if you want to. I just had to keep busy." And that she did! - She served as a hospice volunteer for a number of years. - Also served as a Senior Legislator. Fay was an original member of the Senior Affairs Commission from Dec. 11, 1986 to the present time. She served as chairperson of the commission from July 1987 until July 1996. Fay is the recipient ofthe George Webster Award, for being the outstanding Senior Citizen of the year. Another qualification for that award is you had to give over 50 years of community service. Fay was instrumental in a number of accomplishments on behalf of Senior Citizens. These include: - Advocating the constructions of Perris Hill Senior Citizens Center, helping to influence the Mayor and Common Council to support it. Coordinating the first Senior Input -Output conference, which attracted hundreds of seniors and provided them with valuable information on issues of concerns to seniors. She served as Chairperson on the Perris Hill Advisory Committee, Fay hosted "Senior Times" television show on public access channel that provided valuable information to seniors. It is for these reasons that I would like to propose we name the dining room at Perris Hill Senior Center, 'The Jack and Fay Rodgers Dining Room.' Sincerely Q~,4.~ t;fosephine A.
