Synopsis of Previous Council action:
June 17, 1991 - Mayor and Common Council authorized application and acceptance
of Action grant for period October 1, 1991 through September
30, 1992.
Recommended motion:
That the Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department
be authorized to receive and administer an ACTION grant in the amount of
$43,714 to continue the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for the period
October 1, 1992 through June 30, 1993.

Authorization to Receive and Administer
Action Funding of $43,714
For the 1992/93 Retired Senior
Volunteer Program
This department has received word that it will receive a
continuation ACTION grant for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program
for 1992/93 in the amount of $43,714.
The RSVP has been in operation in the City of San Bernardino for
approximately 18 years. The RSVP provides volunteers for work
sites throughout the City and the surrounding area. Volunteers
work in such places as Goodwill Industries, Center for Individuals
with Disabilities, Convalescent Hospitals, Libraries, City Hall and
numerous other similar areas. The RSVP is an excellent program
involving senior citizens who have a desire to put their time and
talents to work and provide a vital service to many and various
organizations. Our volunteers are currently serving in 64 sites
throughout the City and surrounding area.
During the past year, over 360 senior citizen volunteers have been
active in the community. These dedicated seniors have given more
than 75,000 volunteer hours of work. When figured at the minimum
wage, this equates to over $318,750 worth of community service.
City matching funds required for this program are in the current
budget in the form of cash match and in-kind support services. In
addition, RSVP receives donations from local organizations and
holds fund raising events to offset some of the costs of operation
during the budget year.
It is recommended that this authorization be approved to continue
this program.
