Both the Fire Department and the Firefighters Union are in agreement that paramedics should be classified as P-2's, since their main responsibility is not firefighting, but rather emergency medical care. Since the Fire Department is in the process of hiring a number of new paramedics, rather than waiting to include this change in the new MOU now being negotiated, it is recommended that this be incorporated into the existing MOU as a side letter. The proposed change in paramedic classification would read as follows: Employees hired after 10/1/92 as Paramedic Firefighters will be hired as a P-2 classification, thus creating a separate Paramedic Firefighter job title. Firefighter paramedics hired prior to 10/1/92 will continue in the P-1 classification, unless they voluntarily want to become P-2 Paramedic Firefighters. The City Attorney's Office has reviewed this request, and feels this reclassification is permissible under the Charter. The accomplish this change in classification, the following steps must be taken: 1. Prepare a job description for' this classification and submit it to the civil Service Board for approval. 2. Prepare a side letter to the current MOU incorporating the above proposed change in paramedic classification and obtain signature from the Union. RECOMMENDATION That the Mayor and Common council approve reclassification of paramedics from P-1 to P-2, and establish a position for P-2 Paramedic Firefighter. 75-0264
