Agende Item No. ~, / CI10 OF SAN BERNARDItJ) - REQUEOT FOR COUNCIL AC'QON STAFF REPORT Every year the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino is allocated Section 8 Certificates for use throughout the County (including City of San Bernardino). Under the Section 8 Existing Housing Program and Housing Voucher Program, HUD has made a preliminary commitment to the Housing Authority to allocate two-hundred (200) additional vouchers to assist very low income families and senior citizens to secure affordable rental housing. The two-hundred (200) vouchers will serve to alleviate a portion of the Housing Authority waiting list of approximately 1,700 applicants, county wide. Housing Authority staff advises that approximately 100 of the vouchers will assist senior citizens. Section 213 of the Housing and Community Development Act and subsequent regulations require that the Housing Authority gain approval of cooperating cities, prior to submitting its application to HUD for allocation of vouchers. The alloca- tion of additional vouchers enables the City to remain in compliance with its goals pursuant to the CDBG Housing Assistance Plan, previously approved by the Mayor and Common Council and HUD. Staff recommends that the Mayor and Common Council authorize the Mayor of the City of San Bernardino to send a letter to the Executive Director of the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino approving the allocation of additional Section 8 vouchers to the Housing Authority on behalf of the c~an Bernardino.
