AUTHORIZATION FOR SUBMISSION
OF A RENEWAL APPLICATION TO THE STAFF REPORT
FEDERAL ACTION AGENCY FOR TWO VISTA
VOLUNTEERS
February 23, 19B7
The Vista Volunteers working through the West Side Drop-In Center, have reached
approximately 500 individuals for job counseling. This is 200 more than our
goal of 300 when the program began. This service of Vista Volunteers has
allowed our Community Employment Development person to make more employer con-
tacts, thus providing more opportunities for those needing jobs to have contacts
with potential employers.. On several occasions the Vista Counselors have been
directly responsible for the success of the job candidate because of their work
with the candidates in preparing them for job interviews.
The Vista Volunteers set up a Citizens Advisory Board made up of members of the
community who are aware of the various problems being faced by our unemployed
citizens. The Advisory Board has made the community more aware of the problems
and it is anticipated that the effects of the Vista program will continue in
the community to help solve problems.
Our Vista Volunteers have received valuable experience and training as a result
of this program. They have received on the job training through the Center
Manager and have attended classes at Valley College in Job Counseling, Psychology,
and Spanish language. In addition they have attended City sponsored seminars on
proper telephone use and dealing with the public in a variety of situations.
This has been a valuable program, both for those in our community and for the
Volunteers who needed a work site and training opportunities. The program is
. funded by an ACTION Grant and is therefore at no direct cost to the. City. It
is recommended that the application for renewal be approved.
