STAFF REPORT
Plans for the installation of an automatic washing unit
for vehicles in the City's fleet have been prepared by the
Engineering Division and the project is ready to be advertised
for bids. The project consists of the Contractor furnishing and
installing the automatic washing unit near the fueling island in
the City Yards. Construction of block walls and utility connec-
tions are proposed to be done by City forces, but can also be
done by the Contractor if desired.
Below, is an estimate of the total project cost.

Bond proceeds were allocated in the 1991/92 Budget to finance
certain items of equipment, as shown on the attached copy.
An amount of
the Motor
miscellaneous
$128,300 of these bond proceeds was allocated to
Pool Fund, Account No. 635-311-55800, for
equipment (automatic car wash).
In July, 1991, 416 vehicles were washed at our contract car
wash, for the contract unit price of $2.50. Assuming that each
wash requires 45 minutes of the employees time, (at an average
total hourly cost of $18.50) for transit and waiting, the total
annual cost is $81,700.
The estimated cost for these washes by a City unit in the City
Yards, including 10% for a contract car wash for necessary
detailing, is $12,200. This results in an annual savings of
$69,500, which means that the cost will be recovered in less
than two years.

It is expected that vehicles will be washed more frequently, due
to the convenience of having a wash unit available at the City
Yards. This will have the additional benefit of improving the
app~arance of the City's Fleet.
