Descriotionl Finance: Council Notes: 75-0262 Agenda Item No ~ 7-'-'_ CITY OF SAN BERNAR.Q.O - REQUEST FOROoUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT since May, 1991, the city of San Bernardino Police Department has been operating the Junior Police Academy at Lytle Creek Elementary School. The Academy, made up of fifth and sixth graders, is an all-day program which covers physical fitness, law enforcement training and public service administration. To encourage these young people to continue to lead responsible lives and choose a law enforcement career with the City of San Bernardino, it is recommended that the City sign an agreement with each Junior Academy graduate to pay the student $1,000 upon employment as a sworn officer with the San Bernardino Police Department. Employment must be accomplished prior to his/her twenty-fifth birthday, and an original, signed agreement must be presented within sixty days of employment. ' Since it is likely that only a few of Academy students will actually complete the agreement's requirements and the administrative costs to track such a small account would be high, it is recommended that funds not be set aside to finance this action and assume that the Mayor and Common Council will honor this debt at that time. 75.0264 o o 1 RESOLUTION NO. 2 RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO APPROVING A STANDARD AGREEMENT RELATING TO 3 PARTICIPANTS IN THE JUNIOR POLICE ACADEMY. 4 WHEREAS, the challenges facing our young people today are 5 enormous, and 6 WHEREAS, the Junior Police Academy, made up of 9 and 10 year 7 olds attending Lytle Creek Elementary School, has been established 8 to instill and foster traditional American values and to introduce 9 these young people to law enforcement as a career goal, and 10 WHEREAS, as an inducement to these young people to follow 11 through on these commitments and to reject the negative pressures 12 that are all around them it is appropriate to offer them an 13 additional tangible goal if they choose a career in law 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 enforcement, in the hopes that they will become career law enforcement officers in the City of San Bernardino, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The Mayor is authorized and directed to execute an agreement in the form of Exhibit..
