VIEW CEMETERY. STAFF REPORT The Community Gardens project has been a highly successful program offered by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department for the last 15 years. The objective of a community garden is to provide the opportunity for indivi- duals to cultivate and grow produce for their personal consumption. Participants are usually senior citizens, apartment dwellers, military families and low income. A community garden provides adequate space that would not otherwise be available to the would-be gardner. The communal setting allows for the development of friendships, the sharing of gardening techniques, the sharing of fruits and vegetables and the opportunity to celebrate with family and friends at harvest time. The Director of Mt. View Cemetary has offered portions of the cemetary that are undeveloped and unused. There are several issues that are of consideration in developing the gardens. The possibility of the Patton Farms property being used for the County Hospital would leave the gardeners without a location. Additionally, the current location of the gardens on the outskirts of the city is not convenient for the majority of city dwellers. A more centralized location should result in greater participation by city residents. Several other advantages are associated with the Mt. View site. The location will have an easy access and exit that would allow minimum interruptions of service. The property would be available without charge. The on-going presence of maintenance staff at the cemetary would help prevent theft and vandalism to the gardens. Construction and mate1y $70,000. $35,000 would be start-up costs are estimated at approxi- Annual operating costs of approximat1y offset fully as in part by gardener fees.
