It began with a few friends, a few cars, and a dream. Over the years it flourished and became a symbol of community pride and unity. September 21 st, 2002 marked the 10th anniversary of the Salute to the Route with a celebration at Nuftez Park. Over 230 vehicles and various community organizations joined the over 6,000 spectators to enjoy a day offestivities and entertainment. It was a day I will always remember. To go back a little in time, three years ago the Salute to the Route embraced the idea of promoting the "Tobacco~Free Cars Saves Lives" campaign for the Public Health Department TURN Program. This became a very successful partnership, which resulted in the "Tobacco-Free Cars Saves Lives" calendar recognized throughout the county. I would like to thank Esther Jimenez for her vision and deep commitment to this campaign, because it opened my eyes to the many other opportunities we have to promote civic pride and youth programs. I receive many calls asking for assistance in promoting health fairs, school programs and other events by organizing a display of classic "smoke-free" cars. I would like to offer my assistance, however, the organizing and implementation of the September Salute to the Route event consumes an enormous amount of time and energy, leaving room for little else. Therefore, I am announcing the retirement ofthe annual September event known as the Salute to the Route and its Board of Directors who worked under me as Founder and Executive Director. Salute to the Route has had a good ten-year run and Angelina and I have many fond memories. I would like to thank everyone who believed in the Salute to the Route - The Gents Organization, Public Health TURN, Mayor Valles, the City of San Bernardino and the City Counsel, our sponsors, car enthusiasts and most of all the Salute to the Route Board of Directors. It was an enjoyable experience working with all of you and the community is a better place because of your service and contributions. I have personally trademarked the Salute to the Route name and as such, own all rights and usage. I will continue to authorize use of the logo Salute to the Route to assist various youth and community agencies that I am involved with throughout the year. Please join me in the upcoming "Salute to the Route Veteran's Day Observance" to be held atE~Jlm!Jmtll<<lltt"lI:r 11 th at Plaza Park located on Historic Route 66.
