That Betty Lewison, Senior Companion Program Coordinator, be authorized Out-Of-State
travel during the period June 21-25, 1992 to attend the 1992 National Volunteer
Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

AUTHORIZATION FOR OUT-OF-STATE TRAVEL
FOR SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM COORDINATOR
TO ATTEND THE 1992 NATIONAL VOLUNTEER
CONFERENCE IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
ACTION, the Federal Government Office under which the
Senior Companion Program falls, has opted not to hold
their own training conferences in the State this year.
Instead they have recommended that Program Coordinators
and Directors attend various other available conferences.
Because our Program Director, Betty Lewison has been in
the field for many years, ACTION recommended that she
should attend the National Volunteer Conference in
Chicago. The goal of ACTION's training programs is to
increase the director's knowledge and skills and to
exchange information and problem solving strategies among
project directors. The Chicago meeting will provide the
environment and opportunity to realize these goals.
Expenses of the conference will be born by the ACTION
Program Budget under which we are currently operating.
There will be no additional costs to be born by City
funding.
This should be a most productive conference for our
Senior Companion Program Coordinator as it will give her
access to those serving in Senior Companion Programs
nationwide. Therefore, it is recommended that this
request for out-of-state travel be approved.

SUBJECT: FY'92 OAVP project Directors' Training

As you have probably heard, ACTION will not be conducting state,
regional or national OAVP training conferences in FY 1992.
However, funds budgeted in OAVP grants for project directors'
travel to ACTION training conferences -will now be available for
project directors' attendance at other relevant training events
in FY 1992.
It is the Agency's goal in authorizing the use of these funds to:
1) increase project directors' level of knowledge and skills
applicable to their functions and 2) maximize the exchange of
information and problem-solving strategies among its project
directors and with the larger aging and volunteer communities.
In order to develOp a regional and state training strategy that
will meet people'S needs, we need the input of project directors.
I am asking for your assistance, as an Association president, in
gathering this input.
Would you please call three or four directors in your association
and discuss this with them. Please share the guidelines listed
below to help frame the discussion:

2. State-level conferences conducted by State Agencies on
Aging or volunteer organizations may be utilized where
the above conferences are not available.

3. Individualized training plans incorporating attendance at
workshops and seminars conducted by recognized subject
matter experts may be authorized when necessary due to
unavailability of the above conferences.
To further help your discussion, here are some ideas generated by
California State ACTION Staff using the above quidelines:

1. Encourage project Directors to attend the ASA Conference
in San Diego in March, 1992.

attend the National Volunteer Conference in Chicago in
June, 1992.
3. Conduct mini-workshops throughout the state, particularly
for new project directors, on grants management. Include
project bookkeepers in these sessions. Enlist the
services of the ACTION Grants Management Office in this
endeavor.
I hope that directors will respond favorably to these training
options. The opportunity to interact with volunteer leaders from
other organizations could be very exciting and enriching.
