None orthat fazed Hector Hernandez, who scored 100 on his circle-ridipg test, keeping his tires between 8 2-foot wide -.-....- By CASSIE MACDuFF Sun Staff Writer Lourdes Hernandez's three sons learned to ride bicycles alomst as soon as they could walk. But Hector, 9,Angel, 7, and Jose,4,- along with 125 other children - got a refresher course in bike safety Saturday at the Optimist Club orSan Bernardino's annual bike rodeo at Lytle Creek Park. "The best thing I like is riding my bike," said Hector, straddling his black one-speed model with the knobby tires. The Hernandez boys live within a few blocks ofthe park near K and Mill streets. They spend a lot artime at the community center playing ball, but the the bike rodeo is "something different," their mother said. At last year's, the boys won a bicycle in the rame that Angel still rides today. The purpose ofthe rodeo is to make sure children understand safety rules before riding their bikes on the street, said Bob Wilson, an Optimist Club volunteer and the track in a 16-foot diameter circle. "He started riding bikes when he was hardly 3," Lourdes Hernandez said. Michael Austin, 12, who came to the rodeo from Delman Heights in a bus with 14 other youngsters, no longer has a bike at home. It was stolen from outside the Delman Heights Community Center while he went to get a drink of water one day. The Shandin Hills Middle School sixth.grader gotto ride one of20 bikes provided by the Optimist Club on Saturday. Michael's younger brother Troy, 7, learned a lesson from his brother's misfortune. Troy said he always makes sure his bike is in the back yard when he's done riding it. Few ofthe youngsters had safety gear such as helmets and elbow pads. Wilson said the club will seek donated helmets to rame off to participants. A bike rodeo is planned Aug. 28 at Perris Hill Park, and another Oct. 9 at Westside Plaza, Wilson said. -1If
