CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT Subject: Authorization to install stop signs on "F" Street and Acacia A venue approaches to 36th Street. Back~round: The Traffic Engineering Section received a request from a citizen to install stop signs at the intersection of 36th Street and "F" Street. The requestor claims that he has observed several "close calls" at the intersection and feels that the stop signs would enhance traffic safety. Traffic Engineering staff evaluated the request. The area of study was expanded to include the adjacent intersection of Acacia A venue and 36th Street, which is similar in nature, relative to traffic, to the intersection of 36th and "F" Streets. Both of these are uncontrolled intersections in a residential area, although there is a nearby church and a synagogue. Visibility is limited at the intersection of 36th Street and "F" Street due to trees and a fence on the southwest corner. The following are the daily traffic volumes that were taken near the intersections: "F" Street south of 36th Street carries approximately 540 vehicles, 36th Street east of "F" Street carries approximately 1,330 vehicles. No counters were set on Acacia Avenue, however, it is estimated that the traffic volumes on this street are similar to those of "F" Street (540 vehicles) . Due to the ration of traffic volumes on 36th Street, staff recommends that two-way stop signs be placed at these intersections. Additionally, the stop signs will help mitigate the visibility concern at the intersection of 36th Street and "F" Street. Since 36th Street carries substantially more traffic than "F" Street and Acacia A venue, it is recommended that traffic on the approaches of "F" Street and Acacia A venue stop for traffic on 36th Street. Financial Impact: The estimated cost of $800.00 for installing the new stop signs will come from Account No. 001-187-5111 (Signing and Striping Materials).
