HomeMy WebLinkAbout22-Public Comments Darrell Hess January 6, 2003 Honorable Mayor Valles and Common Council, My name is Darrell E. Hess, I live at 2389 Palo Alto Way in Running Springs. All of you have come to know me from my past employment as Fire Captain with the San Bernardino City Fire Dept. Although my departure was premature, I still feel I can be of service in a manner consistent with the adage: You can take the man out of the Fire Service, but you can't take the Fire Service out of the man. In that vain, I've created an organization founded with the sincere desire to assist the City in preserving it's fire service history. The Pioneer Fire Co. Museum is a private foundation whose fundamental purpose is to assist the City with a means to save those remaining fire department artifacts, bnildings and apparatus deserving of preservation. In pursnit of this goal, I am happy to inform you of a West Side commmtity beautification project the museum has become involved in. With the gracious permission of the Gary M. Bobbitt family of San Bernardino, the Pioneer Fire Co. Museum is honored to inform you that former Fire Station #3, located at 269 So. Mt. Vernon is to be refurbished as it first appeared when constructed in the early 1900' s. The Bobbitt family has allowed the project with the stipulation that the Museum prepares and preserves the property cousistent with S. B. City Code Enforcement reqnirements and attendant maintenance pertaining to graffiti and litter removal. Although ouly the outside of the fire station will addressed, it is the intention of the principles to restore the frontal area with historically accurate signage and appurtenances consistent with the era. A large sign in both English and Spanish will be placed to the front of the property with appropriate historical information and clear directions on how to access public safety in the event of an emergency. The Pioneer Fire Co. Museum invites the City of San Bernardino to become a stakeholder in the museums noble cause and requests your direct assistant by providing space for a permanent location at 322 No. E St. The occupancy is located on the perimeter of the Carousal Mall and would serve to honor the City Fire Department's formation on October 3, 1878. Please approve this request by the next regular council meeting and allow the city's residents to enjoy, and for the City to showcase their City's bravest during the up conting Route 66 event in September, and 125 year anniversary of the City of San Bernardino Fire Departtnent.
