One of the reasons for refusal is that the job does not pay enough for the work that is required. We get refusals on polling places because people are more and more reluctant to having outsiders coming into their homes and because the $30.00 they receive would not even "cover the cost of cleaning". The inspector is the person who is in charge of the polling place. He or she must come to a training class at City Hall, pick up election supplies, set up the polling places, supervise the polling place, and bring back the returns to City Hall on election night. For all of this, they receive $40.00. The assistant board workers who are referred to as judges and clerks, receive $35.00. They each put in a 14-15 hour day. This pay has been in effect since December 7, 1981. We would like to raise the pay as follows: Inspectors Clerks/Judges Polling places $60.00 45.00 45.00 Our next election is the primary of 1991. This raise in pay would cost the city a total of $6,500. ($65.00 per board) San Bernardino County is proposing a similar increase. Below are some comparisons of what is paid in other counties: Inspectors Clerks Polling Los Angeles Co. & City Orange County Riverside County Barstow $90.00 57.00 60.00 70.00 $75.00 47.00 42.00 60.00 $50.00 35.00 35.00 50.00 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- San Bernardino City (present) San Bernardino City (proposed) $40.00 60.00 $35.00 45.00 $30.00 45.00 (An increase of +20.00 +10.00 +15.00) 75-0264
