Recommended motion:
That the salaries for Fire Department Ranges P-5, P-6, P-7,1 Fire ~1arshal and
Training Officer be established as outlined in the staff report effective
August 1, 1989, and direct the Director of Personnel to prepare an amendment
to Resolution no. 6429.

STAFF REPORT
Section 186 of the City Charter establishes a formula for
setting salaries for local safety members effective each
August 1. City staff has reached agreement with Fire
Management on the 10 cities whose salaries will be averaged
to determine this year's P-5, P-6 and P-7 salaries for the
Fire Department. In addition, our survey of these cities
shows that the average salaries paid for Fire Marshal and
Training Officer are as listed below. In prior years, these
2 salaries have been set at the P-5 level (Battalion Chief).
Charter Section 186 requires us to survey like positions, and
at the request of the Fire Chief and with the agreement of
the City Administrator this was done.
The cities selected are:
Fremont
Fullerton
Modesto'
Orange
Oxnard
Pasadena
Pomona
Stockton
Thousand Oaks
Torrance
The new monthly salary ranges, effective August 1, 1989, are:

The increase from 1988 is as follows with the dollar increase
for Training Officer and Fire Marshal reflecting the new
salaries less the current Battalion Chief salary since these
2 positions were previously paid the same salary as the
Battalion Chief.

Adding 34% to reflect fringe benefit costs which rise with
salary, the total added cost for salaries and fringe benefits
