HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-Presentations RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Sister Marita Beumer, C.PP.S. began her career as a Primary Teacher in Precious Blood, Ft. Wayne, Indiana; Burkettsville and Russia Ohio; and WHEREAS, Sister Marita Beumer continued her work as a missionary in Chile teaching in the formation of "Base Communities, " Literacy with the "camposinos" among various other projects within the congregation; and WHEREAS, Sister Marita Beumer, returning to the states, became the Assistant Treasurer of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Precious Blood in Dayton, Ohio where she helped in the process of Social Security System enrollment and was an advocate for Third World people by monitoring the investments of the congregation; and WHEREAS, Sister Marita Beumer joined the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Somerton, Arizona and became the first Director of Religious Education of the parish and was involved with the Religious Education in three towns and several settlements; and WHEREAS, Sister Marita Beumer initiated the formation of the mission to parish status as Resident Pastoral Minister at St. Jude Mission, in San Luis, Arizona; and WHEREAS, Sister Marita Beumer was instrumental in the integration of the Spanish ~peaking congregation into the parish and with the youth as the Coordinator for the Spanish ~peaking at Our Lady of Sacred Heart in San Diego, California; and WHEREAS, Sister Marita Beumerfacilitated a religious education program for both the English and Spanish speakingfamilies as the Director of Religious Education at the Old Mission Santa Ines in Solvang, California; and WHEREAS, Sister Morita Beumer became the Pastoral Coordinator in 1996 at Our Lady of Fatima in San Bernardino, California where she was effective in accomplishing the inauguration of the "Center of Hope"; and WHEREAS, , June 30, 2005 marks Sister Marita Beumers 91h year with St. Bernardine Catholic Church as Pastoral Coordinator involving herself in various projects and programs within the parish and community; and will celebrate 50 years since her entrance into the Religious Congregation of the "Sisters of the Precious Blood. " NOW, THEREFORE, I, JUDITH VALLES, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO, DO HEREBY COMMEND SISTER MARITA BEUMER on her 50 years of continuous commitment, dedication and accomplishments and congratulate her on this monumental occasion! DATED this 16th day of May 2005 Mayor, City of San Bernardino WHEREAS, the community's peace officers have long sustained a tradition of performing their work to the highest quality possible in order to provide a better life environment for others; and WHEREAS, in an effort to preserve the continued commitment of all peace officers and law enforcement agencies, the members of "Support QUI' Law Eriforcement" committee have designated the week of May 15'" 2005 as "BLUE RIBBON WEEK"; and WHEREAS, "BLUE RIBBON WEEK" is intended to be a show of confidence for all peace officers and law enforcement agencies from the general public and to provide a tremendous morale booster for all the dedicated men and women wearing the badge for the protection of our community; and WHEREAS, each citizen di~playing the blue ribbon during the week of May 15''', 2005 will demonstrate support for every police agency now serving the Cities and County of San Bemardino. NOW, THEREFORE, I, JUDITH VALLES, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF MAY 15TH, 2005 AS BLUE RIBBON WEEK In recognition and support of all peace officers and Law Enforcement Agencies. DA TED this lilt day of May, 2005 WHEREAS, By 1850 California had won independence from Mexico in the Mexican American War, and had been admitted as a state into the Union. In 1851 a company of 500 Mormon men, women and children, with 150 wagons, arrived in the San Bernardino Valley. As the population increased to 1200 people, so did the need for law enforcement. In 1853 the President of the Mormon Church, Brigham Young, appointed Bud Rollins the first law officer in the San Bernardino settlement; and WHEREAS, In 1868 the elective office of Town Marshal was established. The Town Marshall would remain the law enforcement agency in San Bernardino until the town was reincorporated under the newly established rules of city incorporation in 1905. After the city of San Bernardino incorporated under the new rules of incorporation, the Mayor and City Council were elected. H.M. Barton was elected as the first Mayor of San Bernardino. He and the Council took office May 8th, 1905; and WHEREAS, One of the first orders of business for the mayor and council was to appoint a new police force. Mayor Barton read a proclamation that on May 15th, 1905, eight officers would form the San Bernardino Police Department. Since 1905 the San Bernardino Police Department has grown from nine Police Officers to 30 I sworn Police Officers and 152 Civilian Employees. NOW, THEREFORE, I, JUDITH V ALLES, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM MAY 16t\ 2005 AS THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO POLICE DEPARTMENT'S "CENTENNIAL CELEBRA TION" And congratulate the Police Department on 100 Years of service to the community and continuing the tradition of preserving the history of the city through the establishment of the San Bernardino Police Department Historical Society.
